Another new Resident Evil! Apple customers can rejoice, because Resident Evil 2 Remake is coming to the App Store before the end of the year. After Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4 Remake then Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Capcom is preparing the arrival of RE 2. But this is not the 1998 version, but the 2019 remake. And those who already have it tested on consoles know it, it is one of the all the best games of the genre.
Rediscover Resident Evil 2
Over twenty years after its release on PS1, Resident Evil 2 returned in 2019, delivering just as memorable for fans and newcomers alike, blending modern graphics, improved controls and practical enhancements while retaining the horror elements emblematic of the original game. The visuals are vastly improved with a hand-held camera, atmospheric lighting and extremely detailed zombies, setting a new standard for the series. For this, Capcom used its RE engine, also at the origin of Resident Evil 7to recreate the game from scratch, transforming the pixelated characters on pre-rendered backgrounds into an immersive real-time 3D experience.
Originally released in 1998, Resident Evil 2, one of the most iconic games of its time, returns in a completely revised version for new generation consoles.
Despite numerous changes in the enemies (goodbye giant spiders) and the original storyline, the game remains faithful to the claustrophobic and oppressive atmosphere of Resident Evil 2set in the Raccoon City police station, sewers and underground laboratories. Navigating dark corridors, solving puzzles, and managing limited resources like ammo and healing were and still are the keys to the success of this masterpiece. Mysterious characters like Ada Wong add intrigue to the story, although Leon and Claire, the protagonists, are a little lacking in depth. They are too heroic.
One of the biggest improvements in the remake is the inventory system and map, which now updates automatically to indicate if a room has been searched or if any items remain. Additionally, the loading screens are gone, replaced by smoother exploration of the Raccoon City ruins. What happiness. The sound design still plays a crucial role in heightening the tension, with very little music, giving way to ambient noises such as creaking doors, the groans of zombies in the distance, and the heavy footsteps of something sinister in the room neighbor.
Our opinion on Resident Evil 2 Remake
The remake of Resident Evil 2 is surely the best of the series, with real work from the developers to take it through the ages. The only downside is that the similarity between Leon and Claire’s campaigns is still relevant, making the second part less engaging. But the first part is the best in the genre, whether you’re a veteran of the original game or a newcomer to the franchise. Our favorite with Resident Evil 4.
The mobile version
We have not yet been able to test the mobile port, but Capcom assures that the content will be the same, as will the graphics engine. As with previous games, the Japanese company has redesigned the gameplay so that RE 2 can be played on the touch screen. If you don’t like this type of control, there is compatibility with MFi controllers and consoles. But not with the keyboard or the mouse, too bad.
Like all Capcom titles now, you can play a limited portion of the base game for free, with iCloud saving between iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. Then, you will have to pay to unlock the entire adventure. Allow 50 GB in total for the installation according to the publisher, the game ultimately taking 25 GB.
See you at the end of the year for the launch of the game. For the moment, the date is December 31.
