Among the competitors of OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, there is the startup Anthropic. It has already released numerous high-performance AI models, and is already offering its Claude chatbot to the general public. Furthermore, like OpenAI, Anthropic is already attracting billions of dollars in investment. And in the list of its investors, there is Amazon which, in March, completed the 4 billion dollars of investments to which it had committed.
A massive new investment from Amazon?
But apparently, Amazon would be willing to invest even more in this startup. In any case, this is what is suggested by an article recently published by The Information, and relayed by Reuters. Discussions are reportedly underway for a new multibillion-dollar investment from Amazon in the startup. However, it is possible that this investment is conditional. Indeed, Amazon would require Anthropic to use a large number of servers powered by Amazon’s AI chips. As a reminder, Anthropic already relies on the tech giant’s infrastructure to train and deploy its AI models, but the startup would prefer to use Amazon servers using Nvidia chips.
As usual, caution remains in order, since this information has not been confirmed. But in any case, the rumor clearly illustrates investors’ interest in generative AI. As a reminder, in October, OpenAI completed a $6.6 billion financing round which brought its valuation to $157 billion. OpenAI is also in the Top 3 of the most valuable startups in the world, alongside SpaceX and ByteDance, the creator of TikTok.
A partnership that could go beyond the cloud
In any case, the links between Amazon and Anthropic could strengthen. Indeed, it is rumored that Amazon could rely on Anthropic technologies, which are a good alternative to OpenAI models to power the improved version of the Alexa assistant.
Amazon, which is a pioneer in digital assistants, would today have difficulty developing a version of Alexa capable of competing with Gemini or Apple Intelligence. Recently, Bloomberg indicated that the e-commerce giant would have postponed the release of this improved version of Alexa until 2025.
- But for now, these are just rumors.
- Amazon has already invested more than $4 billion in Anthropic, but is already in discussions for a new investment
- Amazon would nevertheless like Anthropic to use its AI chips instead of those from Nvidia
- Rumors also suggest that the improved version of the Alexa assistant could rely on this startup’s AI models
