The news comes from the hand of Mark Gurman, the renowned Bloomberg analyst. It was an ambitious project that sought to offer some Light glasses with advanced ar functionsbut will finally be discarded by the multiple technical obstacles that prevented their viability.

Apple cancels your augmented reality glasses

Apple's goal was to create smart glasses that resemble conventional ones, but with the ability to project information inside. However, the necessary hardware to process these augmented reality functions demanded a power comparable to that of an iPhonebut with a tenth of energy consumption, something that was impossible to materialize. The fact of incorporating a powerful battery would have made them very heavy.

Initially, Apple planned that the glasses connect to the iPhone, but the smartphone did not have the power or autonomy necessary to make them work. As an alternative, engineers chose to use a MAC as a source of energy, but this solution also did not convince Apple executives, who finally decided to rule out the project.

Increased reality glasses xreal

The glasses in which Apple worked were much lighter than the V Vision, did not require a head strap and dispensed with a frontal screen to show the user's eyes. In addition, they included lenses capable of changing dye automatically depending on the user activity.

For almost a decade it has been rumored that the company worked in augmented reality glasses, but the lack of adequate technology has prevented them from becoming a reality. In 2023, Mark Gurman revealed that within the AR/VR team of Apple the glasses were considered an internal joke, since the project remained active more by the enthusiasm of the CEO Tim Cook than for its real viability.

In fact, already in 2017, Cook himself acknowledged that the technology necessary to manufacture quality glasses simply did not exist. And, apparently, in 2025 the situation remains the same.

Despite the cancellation of this device, Apple has not renounced augmented reality. The company continues to develop new versions of Vision Pro, and internal sources say that when technology allows it, Apple will resume the idea of more light and accessible glasses.

Apple glasses

The initial concept of glasses included Internal projectors capable of showing images and videos, and Apple continues to work on personalized microled screens that could be applied to future augmented reality devices.

Meanwhile, its main competitor in this field, goal, continues with its own AR glasses, known as “Orion”. Currently, this prototype has a production cost of more than $ 10,000, but Meta intends to launch a commercial model in 2027, the year in which Apple also planned to release its already canceled smart glasses.
