The App Store policy has been updated to take into account the review of iPadOS applications distributed outside the App Store within the European Union, or notarization. A verification process that allows Apple to verify that the security level of “sideloaded” applications is satisfactory, just as it has done on iPhone since iOS 17.4 for applications such as AltStore, Delta and other Epic Games Store, but also for years on macOS.
iPadOS 18 apps distributed in the European Union
Starting September 16, EU users can download iPadOS apps from the App Store and through alternative distribution. As reported in May, the American firm explains to developers that if they have subscribed to theAlternative Terms Addendum for Apps in the EUthe first annual installs of iPadOS will begin to accrue and the lower App Store commission rate will automatically apply. Apple reminds that other browser engines than WebKit can be used in iPadOS applications, as on iOS.
We would like to inform you that the App Review Guidelines have been revised to add iPadOS to notarization.
What is notarization?
Notarization for iOS and iPadOS apps is a basic review that applies to all apps, regardless of their distribution channel, and focuses on the platform’s security and privacy policies and maintaining device integrity. Through a combination of automated checks and human reviews, Apple says notarization helps ensure that apps are free of malware, viruses, or other security threats, work as expected, and don’t expose users to blatant fraud.
Information from the notarization process is also used for app install cards, which provide a quick overview of apps and their features before users download them, including the developer, screenshots, and other key information. Apps distributed on the App Store will continue to meet Apple’s strict standards for user privacy and security and will undergo Apple’s standard app review process, including notarization and enforcement of content and commerce policies.
