Apple and Sony are working on a collaboration that could revolutionize the user experience of the Vision Pro. According to a report by Mark Gurman, a renowned Apple analyst, both companies are developing some PlayStation VR2 Sense Controller controllers Compatible with Apple mixed reality glasses.
This could offer a higher level of immersion in VR gaming and open up new possibilities for productivity and content editing on visionOS.
New controls to control the Vision Pro
Currently, traditional PS5 and Xbox controllers already work with the Vision Pro, but they are not designed specifically for the needs of virtual reality. According to Gurman, they lack “six degrees of freedom” capabilities, critical to ensuring precise control in virtual environments. Sony’s VR2 controllers, on the other hand, offer these advanced featurespositioning itself as the ideal solution for those looking for a more immersive and fluid experience.
The collaboration would also imply strategic changes on the part of Sony. So far, the PS VR2 Sense Controllers are sold exclusively alongside the PlayStation VR2 headset, but to make them compatible with the Vision Pro, the company would have to start market them as stand-alone accessories. It is likely that Apple will include these controls in its physical store catalog and on the website, making it easier for users to access them.
Although the initial focus is on video games, the controllers could provide great value in other areas. According to Gurman, Sony devices would allow you to use your joystick and directional pad to navigate visionOS menus, while the trigger could replace the pinch gesture with your fingers to select options. This would extend its usefulness to productivity tasks and multimedia content editing, a sector in which Apple seeks to position its device.
This integration also comes at a crucial time for Apple. Since the launch of the Vision Pro in February 2024, sales have been below expectations. According to Mark Gurman’s own sources, they have been sold less than 500,000 unitswhich reflects the difficult adoption that the device is having. By adding more versatile and complete functionalities, such as those that Sony controllers would provide, Apple could attract a broader audience and justify the investment in its mixed reality glasses.
Announcement not yet dated
Although the development of the collaboration has been taking place for months, the companies have postponed its official announcement, and there is no defined date for the launch of this compatibility. However, the news highlights the importance of strategic alliances in the technology sector, especially when it comes to emerging technologies such as mixed reality.
Although the Vision Pro has had a discreet start in terms of sales, this collaboration with Sony could be the boost it needs to establish itself as a competitive option in the virtual reality market. The coming months will be key to observing how this alliance redefines the user experience and whether it manages to position glasses as a more versatile tool for both entertainment and work.
