The wave of cyberattacks hitting French companies is not slowing down. After Picard, Boulanger, Free, SFR and Cultura, it is Molotov’s turn to announce a major data leak. The French streaming platform, which allows you to watch television on different connected media, has confirmed that it was the victim of an intrusion into its information systems during the month of October 2024. A worrying situation which is part of a context of increasing computer attacks.
A massive but limited data leak
The security incident allowed hackers to access as many as 10.8 million email addresses. While this impressive figure does not necessarily correspond to the exact number of users affected (some may have created multiple accounts), it reveals the scale of the breach. The stolen data potentially includes the names, first names and dates of birth of users who provided this information when registering. It is not yet known whether this data is actively used.
Molotov, however, wants to be reassuring by specifying that no banking data or password was compromised during this intrusion. The company says it took immediate steps to secure the systems and contain the leak. A complaint was filed and the CNIL (National Commission for Information Technology and Liberties) was notified, in accordance with legal obligations.
This new case joins a series of similar incidents affecting French companies. Recently, Picard announced the compromise of the data of 45,000 members of its loyalty program. Likewise, the operator Free has recently been in the news following a massive data leak including banking and identity information. A worrying trend that highlights the growing importance of cybersecurity and good practices when it comes to personal data. If you receive a lot of unwanted calls or spam in your emails, you now know where it could be coming from.
