The best part is that I haven’t needed any external tools or to modify the system registry, and yet my computer maintains impeccable performance.
If you have an old laptop, it doesn’t mean you have to leave it in the closet or think about buying a new one. For example, I have one that’s over five years old and it still works perfectly. I’ve achieved this by applying a series of tricks that you can easily put into practice.
It’s worth noting that keeping a Windows computer in perfect condition for a long time isn’t easy, but it’s not impossible either. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need third-party tools or advanced technical knowledge.
All it takes is a few tweaks to your operating system settings and certain habits that I guarantee will work. With proper maintenance, regular cleaning, and certain techniques, your laptop can also stay fast and perform well even after many years of use.
This is how you can get your laptop working like new.
- Clean it periodically: It may seem obvious, but cleaning is crucial to your laptop’s performance. Every week I use a soft cloth to wipe the screen, keyboard, and case, and I use compressed air to remove accumulated dust from the vents, thus preventing the device from overheating. Once a year, if you’re brave enough, you can open the device up to thoroughly clean its internal components, especially the heatsinks.
- Upgrade your RAM and SSD: If you notice your computer slowing down, upgrading your RAM or replacing your hard drive with an SSD can completely revitalize your computer. More RAM improves multitasking and overall performance, while an SSD significantly speeds up system startup, applications, and file transfers.
- Protect it from viruses and malware: A virus can seriously damage your laptop’s performance. I use the built-in Windows Defender protection, performing regular scans and always keeping real-time protection active. This prevents slowdowns and ensures that no malware can negatively affect performance or security.
- Properly suspend, restart, or shut down: Using power modes properly is essential, since you can suspend the computer when you are using it for short periods of time, restart it to apply updates or solve problems, and you should completely shut it down if you are not going to use it for a long time, since this allows you to better manage system resources.
How to generate a BATTERY REPORT in WINDOWS 11
- Disable unnecessary services: Windows runs many background services that you may never need. I regularly review and disable those that aren’t essential to my daily use, freeing up memory and improving performance. You can do this from the Windows services.msc tool, but always be careful not to disable something essential.
- Fewer apps and extensions: I try to keep the operating system clean, without unnecessary apps or browser extensions. Installing only what’s necessary helps prevent disk clutter and reduces resource consumption. I also regularly review my installed programs and remove those I haven’t used in a while.
- Disable unnecessary startup programs: Do you notice that your laptop takes too long to boot? You probably have many programs that start automatically. Frequently check the Startup tab of the Task Manager to disable non-essential programs, which will significantly speed up startup.
- Use power and performance modes wisely: Take advantage of Windows’ power modes based on your needs: High Performance for demanding tasks, Balanced for everyday use, and Power Saver when running on battery power for long periods. This habit helps maintain good performance and extend battery life.
Why it’s important to keep your laptop always ready
It’s important to note that following these recommendations not only improves the overall performance of your Windows laptop but also helps extend its lifespan, allowing you to enjoy it for much longer without needing to replace it.
And in an increasingly demanding environment, where applications and software require greater processing power and memory, keeping your computer optimized is key to meeting those task demands without slowdowns or failures.
