Apple has announced a major change to its Apple Intelligence servers: next year, these advanced systems will begin incorporate the M4 chipwhich represents a leap in performance and processing capacity compared to current technology, which is based on the M2 Ultra chip.
This advance responds to the increasing demands of its artificial intelligence ecosystem, especially now that Apple devices increasingly rely on Apple Intelligence for advanced AI features, such as writing tools, notification summaries, and new capabilities such as the ChatGPT integration with Siri.
What does this update mean?
The decision to upgrade to M4 chips means Apple Intelligence becomes more powerful and capable of handling more complex AI tasks. In practice, this means that functions that depend on these cloud servers will have a faster responsemore advanced processing capacity and superior energy efficiency. Although Apple Intelligence prioritizes processing data directly on the device to ensure privacy, there are certain tasks that require additional support from the cloud, and this is where these servers come into play.
Apple uses what it calls “Private Cloud Compute” to manage this background processing securely. Thus, when users use artificial intelligence functions that require greater processing power, the data is processed on these specialized servers. Apple has clarified that, under this private cloud model, personal data is not stored nor are they shared, protecting user information rigorously.
What changes will you see on your iPhone?
The direct impact of this update will be reflected in the performance and responsiveness of the new iOS features. With the arrival of iOS 18.2 next month, iPhone users will have innovative Apple Intelligence tools, such as “Genmoji” for creating custom emojis, “Image Playground” for image generation, and the integration of ChatGPT in Siri, among others. . All these new developments, which require large amount of processingwill benefit from the jump to the M4 chip, making performance smoother, responses faster, and customization capabilities even broader.
Of course, we have to remember that on the iPhone, Apple Intelligence will not yet be available in Spain. However, you can start testing the features on Macs by changing the language to English.
Everything seems to indicate that this transition to M4 chips is just an initial phase in a series of planned improvements for Apple Intelligence. The company could even be considering advanced versions of the M4 chip, such as the M4 Pro or M4 Max, to offer even more power in its servers. While Apple has not confirmed whether it will immediately upgrade all servers currently using the M2 Ultra, the request to build more servers in Taiwan with its partner Foxconn suggests that Apple has its sights set on a significant expansion of its AI infrastructure.
