Currently deployed in beta version in 65 markets (not yet in France), this new feature offers the possibility of making your playlists as visually captivating as their musical content, thanks to unique images, texts, colors and other graphic elements.

How to customize a playlist on Spotify

As explained on the newsroomto create a custom cover, users simply need to update the Spotify app on their iPhone or Android, select a playlist they created or start a new one, then tap the “Create cover” option in the three-dot menu (“…”) of the playlist. They can then upload their own photos and experiment with several options, such as text styles, background colors, visual effects, and exclusive stickers from artists like Jun Ioneda and James Marshall. Once the cover is finished, it can be shared with friends or on social media.

Users can save only one custom cover per playlist at a time. To keep multiple versions of a playlist’s cover art, it is recommended to create a copy of it using the “Add to another playlist” option and then customize the new one.

Spotify also collaborated with renowned artists and designers, such as Clairo, Jamie xx, and Arlo Parks, as well as visual creators like Pablo Rochat and Vita Kari, to demonstrate the potential of this new feature. The platform even tapped album cover experts like Imogene Strauss and Cey Adams, who have worked with icons like JAY-Z and The Notorious BIG, to inspire users.

Two-step availability

This feature aims to increase user retention in the app, and the company plans to continue improving and expanding it in the future, providing even more tools and customization opportunities. The novelty is available to English-speaking users in 65 markets, including Canada. For France, Belgium and other Switzerland, you will have to wait a few more weeks.

Does this kind of option make you prefer Spotify over Apple Music? Remember that Apple Intelligence will soon allow you to create covers.
