Former NASA engineer, YouTuber Mark Rober has more than 60 million subscribers. A few days ago, this popular science specialist announced a completely crazy project: launching a satellite into space to allow Internet users to take their selfies in space, with the Earth in the background. “One small step for humanity, one big step for your selfies”he writes.

According to explanations from The Verge, this project is carried out in partnership with Google and the American operator T-Mobile. The satellite will be launched by SpaceX in January 2025, then it will start taking selfies a few months later. This features a Google Pixel smartphone, which will display selfies sent by Internet users, and a camera which will take a photo of this selfie with the Earth in the background. And if the user indicates the location of their home, the satellite will wait until it is above this location to take the photo, which will make the experience even more fun.

Unfortunately, to benefit from this unique experience, you will need to obtain a code. Codes are provided to subscribers of CrunchLabs, an organization that offers engineering kits for children and founded by Mark Rober, and to those who become sponsors on this platform. T-Mobile will also offer codes to its customers. And according to The Verge, codes will also be available to Google Pixel customers.

A very interesting video

In any case, the communication operation is successful, since this operation allows CrunchLabs to make its products known. But that’s not all, since Mark Rober’s video also explains, in a fairly simple way for the general public, the satellite design process, the launch, as well as the operation of the satellite once it is in the ‘space.

So, if you’ve always wondered how satellites work and what’s inside them, you can watch the video until the end. It’s extremely interesting. Concerning Mark Rober’s satellite, it has a device that allows you to take selfies (a Google Pixel smartphone and a camera), and an emergency device that will be deployed if there is a problem with the first smartphone. The video details the protection that was put in place to protect the Google Pixel from surviving in space.
