It’s undeniable. Today, second-hand smartphones are popular. They are more popular than ever. Choosing a refurbished smartphone is good for your wallet and the planet. So, while the market for new smartphones is experiencing a sharp decline, due to consumer weariness and skyrocketing prices, that of reconditioned phones is doing well. Better yet, used smartphone sales have exploded over the past six years.

However, the French are still reluctant to resell their old smartphones. According to a recently published survey, 7 out of 10 consumers in France have never resold a smartphone. There is still a way to go.

When you sell your old smartphone, you should expect to see its price drop. That’s the game. But, obviously, the discount varies depending on the brand and model. Our colleagues from World wanted to compare the discount of major telephone brands. So, is it better to resell your iPhone or your Samsung?

Which smartphone brands are discounting the fastest?

To compare the discount of major phone brands, journalists from World noted the evolution of the prices of models released in 2020, 2021 and 2022 on the used and refurbished smartphone market. Then they focused their attention on high-end smartphones between 700 and 1000 euros and mid-range models between 400 and 500 euros. The brands analyzed in this comparison are Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo.

The observation is clear: among Android, high-end smartphones fall very quickly where premium iPhones hold up. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S22 (released in 2022) is only worth a third of its new price while the iPhone 14 (also released in 2022) is still worth half of its new price, approximately.

On the other hand, it is on the side of mid-range smartphones that the trend is reversed. Android mobiles sold between 400 and 500 euros are more resistant to the erosion of time, with those from 2022 still worth around 40% of the new price. As for the Cupertino company, mid-range mobiles are showing an even stronger and faster discount.

So, if you are looking for a used smartphone at a low price, it is more judicious to turn to the iPhone SE (both 2022 and 2020) while high-end enthusiasts will have every interest in choosing an Android smartphone to hope to save money.
