It has been known for a while that OpenAI is developing the successor to GPT-4, which should provide even smarter AI. But while we expected this new model, called GPT-5, to come out this year, it did not arrive. This December, for 12 days, OpenAI announced a series of new features, including the ChatGPT Pro subscription, free Canvas functionality, and the possibility of using the camera in advanced voice mode. On the other hand, no mention of GPT-5.

And thanks to an article from the Wall Street Journal (via TechCrunch), we may know why this long-awaited AI model has still not been released. Indeed, OpenAI would have encountered obstacles in the development of the successor to GPT-4. According to the new rumor, the current version of GPT-5 is not good enough to justify its costs, although the AI is better.

Furthermore, OpenAI would also need an astronomical amount of data to train this new AI, and could no longer be satisfied with public data and that which it can exploit thanks to its licensing agreements. Therefore, to train the future GPT-5, the creator of ChatGPT would pay people to create the data he needs. OpenAI would also use “synthetic” data that was created by its other AI models, like o1.

Competition is getting tougher in the sector

As usual, this information should be considered with caution, since it does not come from an official source. But in any case, if ChatGPT already has very intelligent models, its creator must continue to innovate so as not to be eclipsed by the competition. Among OpenAI’s competitors, there are Google and Meta, but also other very promising startups, such as Anthropic or the French laboratory Mistral.

In any case, OpenAI may need even more funds to finalize the development of GPT-5. As a reminder, even if ChatGPT already generates large revenues, its creator is not yet profitable. And this is the reason why OpenAI continues to raise funds. In October, it raised $6.6 billion, which allowed it to reach a valuation of $157 billion. Today, OpenAI is, as a result, one of the most valuable unlisted companies in the world.

  • According to a Wall Street Journal article, OpenAI would have difficulty developing GPT-5, the successor to GPT-4
  • The company is not yet satisfied with the results obtained, and would need more training data
  • Developing GPT-5 would also be very expensive
