Polysoft, known for creating third-party accessories, has managed to develop replacement SSD memories that allow users to increase the storage capacity of their devices in a simple and economical way.
Changing your SSD is now cheaper
The key to Polysoft’s success is its meticulous reverse engineering process. While Apple has sealed the SSD of its Mac Studio so that it cannot be easily replaced, Polysoft has managed to decipher the operation of the Californian company’s proprietary storage units. This has allowed them to manufacture compatible SSD drives that maintain the same speed and reliability as the originalsbut at a much lower price.
The new product, called StudioDriveis an SSD replacement drive designed specifically for Mac Studio with M1 and M2 chips. It is available in 2TB, 4TB and 8TB capacities, with prices ranging from €399 ($420) for the 2TB version, to €1,099 ($1,160) for the 8TB version.
This is a significant savings compared to Apple’s pricing, which charges over $600 for a 2TB configuration and up to $2,400 for 8TBbut it only allows it to be replaced at the time of purchasing the device. Additionally, Polysoft offers read speeds of up to 7.4 GB/s, maintaining the performance expected from a machine as powerful as the Mac Studio.
The story behind this innovative solution is not simple. According to Polysoft, the reverse engineering process was complex. They used a laser station to disassemble an original Mac Studio SSD module, measure each of its components, and then reproduce your schematic. This level of detail has allowed us to create a replacement drive that is not only functional, but also performs on a par with Apple’s original SSDs.
They will reach more devices
The product began its journey through a successful Kickstarter campaign, where the first buyers were able to purchase the units with an exclusive discount. However, Polysoft has announced that regular sales will begin in 2025, meaning those interested will have to wait a while to get their hands on the product. Meanwhile, the company has shown that they still have much more to present. Although at this time the storage improvement is limited to the M1 and M2 models of Mac Studio, it is not ruled out that Polysoft could apply the same reverse engineering to the SSD drives of the Latest Mac minilike the M4, which could open the door to future updates for other devices. Who knows if it will reach MacBooks?
This advance, which is how it should be considered, solves in one fell swoop a problem that affected a large number of users: the possibility that Mac Studio users can now choose the storage capacity they want without having to settle for the expensive and limited options from Apple. Additionally, as a more economical solution, Polysoft offers a more affordable alternative for those who need more space on their devices without compromising performance or reliability.
