Instead of competing with ChatGPT, Apple Intelligence offers some features on the iPhone, while allowing the user to request ChatGPT directly on the Siri interface and on the writing tools integrated into the iPhone, l iPad and Macs. This partnership with OpenAI could be very lucrative for Apple, since the firm charges a commission on ChatGPT subscriptions which will be paid via the App Store. And the benefits included in the ChatGPT subscription can be used directly on Siri or on tools integrated into the ecosystem.
However, Apple does not intend to limit itself to this integration of ChatGPT, since its objective is to allow Apple Intelligence users to choose between several models. And one of the alternatives that the firm wants to integrate with Apple Intelligence is Gemini, the product offered by Google. Just after the opening of the WWDC conference in June, Craig Federighi, the head of software development at Apple, declared: “We want to allow users to choose the models they want, perhaps Google Gemini in the future. Nothing to announce yet.”
And previously, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman predicted that the new collaboration between Apple and Google could be announced this fall. But now, he believes that the integration between Apple Intelligence and Gemini should instead be formalized next year. In his latest newsletter, the journalist explains that Apple could grant an exclusivity window to OpenAI, before announcing the availability of other artificial intelligence models. But of course, as this information does not come from an official source, caution remains in order.
In the meantime, Gemini Live is already available on the iPhone
In any case, Google did not wait for this possible collaboration with Apple Intelligence to strengthen the presence of its Gemini chatbot on the iPhone. As a reminder, Gemini has been available on iOS for a while, via a tab on the Google application. But recently, Google also launched an app entirely dedicated to Gemini on the App Store. In addition to the Gemini features that were already offered via the Google application, this new app also allows access to Gemini Live on the iPhone.
Gemini Live is one of the most interesting Gemini features, since, like ChatGPT’s advanced voice mode, it allows you to chat with the AI in a fluid and natural way, as if you were chatting with a human being. Alternatively, the Gemini app for the iPhone could also serve as an alternative for anyone who does not have access to Apple Intelligence on their iPhones. As a reminder, Apple Intelligence is only compatible with the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Additionally, for the moment, Apple is blocking the deployment of Apple Intelligence in the European Union, while waiting to be sure that it complies with EU rules.
- Apple Intelligence already allows ChatGPT to be integrated with Siri and writing support tools on compatible products
- And Apple also wants to offer a similar integration of Google’s Gemini AI
- Nothing is official yet, but according to a rumor, the collaboration between Apple and Google could be announced next year
- In the meantime, Google has just launched its Gemini application for the iPhone
- This is an interesting alternative for those using products incompatible with Apple Intelligence (and EU residents)
