The latest wave of age verification with AI (artificial intelligence) YouTube is generating a serious problem: adult users are being marked as minors and suffering access restrictions to videos and features. The deployment, currently active in the United States, the United Kingdom and some countries in the EU (European Union)has caused complaints on networks and forums about false positives that force those affected to prove their age again.
YouTube defends that the system seeks to protect minors and comply with child safety regulations. But the reality for those who have been misclassified is less kind: the service limits content, disables personalized ads and activates digital well-being reminders by defaultall this until the owner double check your coming of age with a document, a selfie or a credit card.
What is happening with AI verification
The system combines automatic signals to estimate age depending on the use of the account: viewing history, topics consumed, age and activity. With this estimate, YouTube applies restrictions to whoever it considers a minor, even if the profile claims to be an adult. In the last phase of deployment, false positives have skyrocketed: adults who receive the notice “We have changed some of your settings. We have not been able to verify that you are of legal age”, next to the button to verify age.
Beyond the initial annoyance, the practical consequences are evident: they become blocked age restricted videosthey are reduced recommendations on sensitive topics (for example, body image) and functions are limited. The creators might also notice changes in their demographics and incomebecause accounts marked as minor they do not receive personalized ads.
How it affects you and what you can do

If YouTube has mistakenly classified you as a minor, the only option currently available is manual verification. The platform offers three ways: official document, selfie which will be compared with the image of the document or credit card to confirm legal age. Until the process is completed, you will live with the restrictions.
It is also advisable to review some fundamental aspects: log in to the main accountcheck the birthdate on Google and avoid shortcuts that can worsen the automatic estimate (such as sharing an account with a teenager). If none of these actions work, it will be necessary to resort to verification methods.
The regulatory context and why it arrives now
YouTube does not take these measures in isolation. In 2025, different regulators have toughened the demand age controls: from the Online Safety Act from the UK to national initiatives in Europe and Oceania that pressure platforms to shield the experience of minors. To comply, YouTube has accelerated a mixed approach: AI estimation + on-demand verification.
The paradox is evident: the greater the protection, the greater the friction for adult user. If the algorithm gets it wrong, the burden falls on the adult user, who must provide more data to recover their normal experience.
YouTube will have to refine classifiers and offer less intrusive verification methods if you don't want to turn a security measure into a source of frustration. Despite these drawbacks, we have witnessed how in recent months the company has been working to improve the experience, with a new redesign of its interfacesomething that may be relevant for those of us who use the platform daily.
