AirPods Pro USB-C doesn’t just change its USB port. Three other new features have been added.
At first glance, the AirPods Pro 2 USB-C is just a replacement for the AirPods Pro 2 case. But if you look at the small details, they almost look like AirPods Pro 3. Explanations.
Do they have any exclusive functions compared to the AirPods Pro 2 Lightning? Our comrades from Numerama were able to ask Apple the question directly and the answer is clear: yes.
Three changes instead of one
When writing our first article about them, we titled “Apple launches new AirPods Pro, with just one size change”. Except that since then, we have learned that three other new features are integrated.
Dust resistance. The old case only had an IPX4 certification while the new one includes an IP54 certification. As written Numeramawe do not know if this change comes from a redesign of the innards of the headphones or from Apple’s desire to pass certification.
On the audio side, two important new features are also making their debut. A very tangible one: the integration of a new 20-bit lossless audio protocol at 48 kHz that Apple promises without latency. The famous protocol will be used for the first time on the Apple Vision Pro, which will also be the first device to support it.
Second addition in audio: the Apple firm also promises a new “acoustic architecture” without further details. On the other hand, it would be this new architecture which would justify Apple not offering the new Lossless audio protocol on the AirPods Pro Gen 2 Lightning. The H2 chip, present in both models, has nothing to do with it, again according to the brand questioned by Numerama.
This is probably also for this reason that Apple does not offer its new USB-C box for sale as an accessory attached to the AirPods Pro 2. This new generation, which could be described as AirPods Pro 2.1, is not content in fact not just change the case.
