It’s been a year since Apple announced the iPhone 14 and Apple Watch Series 8, as well as the Apple Watch Ultra. A novelty shared between these three devices is the detection of accidents. A very useful function that we all wish did not even have to existbut unfortunately it is very necessary.
Some time ago a small controversy was generated around it because it detected that some users had suffered an accident when getting on a roller coaster. The telephone or the clock notified emergencies, and for a few weeks the amusement parks were filled with ambulances and police Luckily they didn’t have to act. Now the emergency services call earlier to confirm if it is a false alarm or if they have to go.
The prognosis would have been very different if not for the Apple Watch
Today we would like to give another piece of news in which we would explain that everything had been a mistake, but it is not the case. This past Thursday morning, a driver from Wisconsin was in his car and got into an accident. He ended up face down and more than 30 meters from the place where he crashed. It was four in the morning, nothing to be seen, and the prognosis was not good.
Fortunately, his Apple Watch detected the collision, and immediately notified the emergency services. He also shared his exact location, and it’s very likely that it saved his life. Ronald Molnar, the head of the Kansasville Fire and Rescue department, explained that it was the Apple smartwatch that surely made this person still alive today: “Due to the darkness and distance from the road, if it hadn’t been for the Apple Watch, the vehicle probably wouldn’t have been discovered for at least two hours.”
When the rescue services arrived, the driver was unconscious. He was airlifted away with serious injuries. At the moment we only know that he is receiving treatmentalthough the prognosis would have been much worse if he had not been found so quickly.
The accident detection service uses a series of sensors and accelerometers to detect when we have suffered a crash. If it does, a notification appears in which we will have to confirm that we are okay, or if we want to call emergencies. If we don’t reply, will automatically call and send our coordinates so they can come for us.
It is true that this system sometimes generates false alarms, but It is better to have 100 false alarms than once it is needed, it does not work. We hope no one ever has to use it, but it’s nice to know we have that protection.
