Apple introduced MagSafe technology with the iPhone 12 in 2020, which not only works as a smarter way to attach accessories to the iPhone, but also as a more convenient wireless charging solution. Two years later, the YouTube channel LoadLAB did some tests to compare if there were any performance improvements using the MagSafe charger on the iPhone 14 Pro Max compared to last year’s iPhone 13 Pro Max. The comparison also applies to the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro in general.
A more efficient charger on the new iPhone 14
First of all, you should know that the MagSafe technology has not changed much since the iPhone 12. However, LoadLAB was able to observe that newer iPhones can actually take advantage of the MagSafe charger more effectively.
Testing was done with regular Apple MagSafe chargers running firmware 247.0.0.0 released in October. Concretely, LoadLAB measured the amount of power transmitted while charging, power spikes, and the time it takes to fully recharge the device. This is where we can find some interesting differences in the results obtained with the iPhone 14 Pro Max compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
For example, the iPhone 14 Pro Max was able to maintain the charging speed between 16W and 19W for longer than the iPhone 13 Pro Max. After 44 minutes of charging, charging speed using the MagSafe charger on the iPhone 13 Pro Max dropped significantly, while it took an hour and four minutes (20 minutes longer) for this to happen on the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
In the end, the iPhone 14 Pro Max reached 100% charge in two hours and 18 minutes, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max took two hours and 26 minutes to reach 100%. The difference isn’t that significant, but those looking for fast charging are better off heading to the iPhone 14 Pro Max, as it can recover 50% battery life in less time than the 13 Pro Max.
According LoadLAB, the difference in results is likely due to the improved thermal system of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. As new phones can stay “fresh” longer, MagSafe takes advantage of this, much like video games that hog the CPU a lot and logically heat up the innards.
Remember for all intents and purposes that using a USB-C to Lightning cable will be twice as fast as Apple’s wireless charger.
If you do not yet have a MagSafe charger, Apple sells its accessory for 49 euros, while the MagSafe Duo charger costs 149 euros. If that’s too expensive, there are multiple third-party MagSafe accessories at bargain prices.
