TRAI has asked this in its consultation paper
TRAI has asked in the consultation paper what measures should be taken to make digital devices and digital connectivity affordable to empower citizens to maximize the benefits of an inclusive digital society. The regulator has fixed October 16 as the last date for comments on the paper and October 31 for counter comments. TRAI has given the example of exploring the feasibility of smartphone financing and second hand smartphones in the country. TRAI believes that the rapid growth in technology and introduction of 5G services, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, could widen the digital divide if not managed properly.
Government has banned the import of laptops, tablets and PCs
Last month, the central government had imposed an import ban on laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra small form factor computers and servers with immediate effect. The government wants to promote local manufacturing with this step. Any company bringing laptops and computers for sale in India will now have to obtain permission or license from the government for its inbound shipments.
