We are at a point where computing, as we know it, has its days numbered due to the emergence of artificial intelligence. A few weeks ago Microsoft presented Copilot+a technology that was intended for the “PC with AI«But what does this new label mean and what characteristics must a computer have to obtain it?
Recently, we have seen Apple partner with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT AI to its macOS and iOS operating systems. This has raised serious concerns about user privacy, which could easily be compromised.
Thus, the two main operating system developers have fallen at the feet of this technology. Their integration will end up being total and we will not be able to prevent it. The only way we will have to get rid of this is to choose to install a Linux distribution.
Artificial intelligence comes to computers
During the presentation of Microsoft Copilot+, a term was coined called “AI PC”. This is a combination of hardware and software capable of artificial intelligence and machine learning on the device. The system has the ability to perform AI tasks without needing to be connected to the internet.
You should know that the “AI PC” label is intended for computers that meet these two fundamental characteristics:
- The processor will need to have the so-called Neural Processing Units (NPU). These NPUs are, broadly speaking, a new type of core specially developed for AI tasks.
- The operating system must have a set of tools and AI-powered applications. There are various functions that can be included, such as smart assistants, productivity tools and much more.
We already have the first processors on the market that include the new NPUs. Essentially we have these models:
- Intel Core Ultra In their different generations they already include specific NPU cores.
- Qualcomm Snapdragon which also include NPU and are the first compatible with Microsoft Copilot+.
- AMD Ryzen AI They are processors that include XDNA cores, which is what the company has called its NPUs.
What does an “AI PC” bring us?
The first thing is to get a more personalized experience, better solving our needs. It can be a great complement in organizing trips, creating school assignments, consulting information and much more.
Using this technology allows us to improve creativity, being able to edit images and video easily, create multimedia content using text, enrich texts and much more. It can also be used to enrich work and reports, providing useful information, generating a summary or creating tables based on the data, among others.
These are just some of the areas where AI could help us. It could also help improve diagnosis and optimize treatment, complement teachers, and even support developers.
It should be noted, however, that AI poses great risks. The systems presented so far claim to perform tasks locally. This, in theory, guarantees a high level of privacy, although some functions may pose a security risk.
