Of course, 24H2 will be a free update of the operating system for all users. This version will have, as usual, 24 months of support, and will mark the future of development for the operating system. In addition, there may even be differences in the functions available to us depending on the computer, or device, on which we run this version.
What’s new in Windows 11 24H2
Although there is still a little time left for its launch, and Microsoft can still surprise us with new functions and features, below we leave you everything we know, so far, that the new Windows 11 24H2.
Artificial intelligence
The first thing we are going to find in the new version 24H2 of Windows 11 is a considerable increase in the Artificial intelligenceMicrosoft has been working hard to bring AI to all users in the most native way possible within Windows. Of course, we must keep in mind that AI-based features, beyond Copilot, are not going to be for everyone, since it will only work (for now) on computers that have dedicated neural processing units (NPUs) and that have more than 40 TOPS.
The AI-based functions that we are going to find are:
- Memories. A function that will record everything we do on the PC and allow us to return to any point (file, document, website, etc.) at any later time.
- Subtitles with real-time translation. We can translate any subtitle into any language we want in real time.
- Improvements to video calls. Thanks to AI, we will be able to improve the quality of the image and sound when using apps such as Zoom, Teams and similar.
- Co-Creator. A new feature for Paint that will allow us to create high-quality images from doodles.
- Auto Super Resolution. Automatically adjusts the resolution of games, and scales accordingly, without altering the quality to relieve the load on the CPU and graphics.
Copilot should also be available to all users with this version, although it has not yet been confirmed whether it is finally ready to land in the European Union.
What’s new in File Explorer
Windows 11’s File Explorer continues to improve little by little. Although the big change came with the release of version 23H2, this new Windows update is also going to improve this key element of the system a little more.
Thus, for example, we will encounter the possibility of Edit PNG file metadata without having to resort to other programs. Also, for example, new quick commands are added to the Windows 11 context menu, with which we can copy, paste or share files much faster.
The function to compress and decompress files natively within Windows has also been finally included. Specifically, we can now compress and decompress ZIP, RAR, 7Z and TAR files. In addition, we can adjust the compression level and other parameters of the process.
Changes in the taskbar
Despite the criticism that the taskbar received when the first version of Windows 11 arrived, update after update, it has also continued to improve and evolve. Now, with the arrival of version 24H2 of the operating system, we find a new function, thanks to which we can create different “pages” of quick functions, which will allow us to add several shortcuts and move vertically between them.
I sweat
Another new feature that we are going to find in this new version of Windows is the possibility of using the “sudo” command to run commands in PowerShell with administrator permissions. This is the most well-known command in Linux, and to demonstrate Microsoft’s commitment to making its system as accessible as possible for administrators and developers, it has finally decided to equip it with this command.
This command will have to be activated manually within the “For developers” section of the Windows 11 configuration panel. But, once activated, we can use it just like on any Linux system. In addition, once activated, Windows can prevent us from making certain changes to the system (changing settings, deleting programs, etc.) if we do not invoke the superuser.
Other news
In addition to all of the above, we also find two other very interesting new features:
- Wi-Fi 7As long as our network card is compatible, starting with Windows 11 24H2 we will be able to connect to the Internet through these wireless networks much more quickly and stably.
- Hot Patches. It’s a feature designed for businesses, but starting with 24H2 we’ll be able to install Windows updates and apply the changes without having to reboot. It won’t apply to all updates, but it will apply to many small changes. Our system will be protected and updated in memory, and the changes will be applied automatically when we reboot manually.
We will keep updating as we learn about more changes.
How to install the update today
If you don’t want to wait until October or November for the official release, there’s a little trick that will allow you to download the update today. All you have to do is sign up for Microsoft’s Insider program. This program allows users to download and install “beta” versions of Windows to get a first taste of the latest features before anyone else and help Microsoft detect and eliminate all kinds of problems.
Any user can sign up for the Insider program from the Windows Update section in the OS Settings menu. Once signed up, we will automatically download the latest version of Windows for testing before anyone else.
Of course, the probability of having errors is quite high, so we must take this into account before signing up for the Insider program.
