No one has noticed it yet, Apple having not mentioned it during the “It’s Glowtime” conference, but the standard iPhone 16, the base model of the new 2024 range, recovers a feature previously reserved for the “Pro”: the “always-on” mode which appeared with the iPhone 14 Pro.
An always-on display
Customers who don’t want to spend more than 1,200 euros on the new iPhone 16 Pro, or who prefer to have a lighter phone, should know that the iPhone 16 is gaining another feature from the “Pro” this year. After the Dynamic Island last year, it’s the always-on display, the famous always-on displaywho arrives according to the Apple datasheet In France.
The “Always-On” feature on the iPhone allows the screen to remain partially active even when the device is locked.
This way, the screen permanently displays information such as time, date, notifications, and widgets (weather, calendar, etc.), without having to touch the device. All this is configurable according to your wishes, in order to guarantee the confidentiality of your data. The “Always-On” screen is designed to consume very little energy, thanks to OLED technology that turns off black pixels and reduces the brightness of the screen when the phone is not activated.
Here is a screenshot of the technical sheet (which nevertheless mentions the absence of adaptive display from 1 to 120 Hz, but the ability to go down to 1 nit of brightness):
Other new features of the iPhone 16
Otherwise, the iPhone 16 (6.1 inches) and iPhone 16 Plus (6.7 inches) have received a new “Camera Control” button that allows you to quickly take photos, and much more.
The button is integrated into the iPhone’s frame and provides haptic feedback. A press opens the camera app, while a long press starts video recording. It also allows quick access to zoom and other features via a swipe gesture and a new on-screen interface.
Both models feature the Action Button, introduced last year with the iPhone 15 Pro, significant battery life improvements, brighter and more durable displays, support for Wi-Fi 7, and the new A18 chip. This chip delivers a 30% increase in CPU performance over the A16 Bionic and features hardware-accelerated ray tracing for improved gaming graphics. The iPhone 16 series is available in Ultramarine, Teal, Pink, White, and Black, with a color-infused glass back.
Finally, note that Apple has aligned the two vertically cameras, with a 48-megapixel main camera that doubles as a 12-megapixel telephoto camera, and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera. Both models can capture space photos and videos, compatible with the Apple Vision Pro headset.
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus start at $969 and $1,119, respectively, with 128GB of base storage. Pre-orders open Friday, September 13, and the devices will be available in stores and at retailers on September 20.
