The company will suffer a severe blow with this formalization of the union, since they had tried to avoid the creation by all possible means.
Workers at the JFK8 distribution center located on Staten Island voted in favor of creating the union 2,654 – 2,131 in a historic vote.
Amazon will be able to challenge the results of this vote until April 8 before the National Labor Relations Board of the United States.
Amazon workers created the first union
The union represents a victory for the union movement in that country, since the company founded by Jeff Bezos is the second with the largest number of workers in the US.
“We are disappointed with the outcome of the Staten Island election because we believe having a direct relationship with the company is in the best interest of our employees,” the company wrote of the results.
Workers will have the opportunity to create a union that seeks to ensure their well-being, in the face of a direct response for the company’s treatment.
Amazon will have to work out that new relationship with the union that could expand to other parts of the country, as it is only the beginning of the movement.
The company is at a historic moment of sales and profits, but also of internal changes that could bring complications.
Unions in the United States are not so welcomed by companies, seeing them more as a problem than a solution.
The company can fight the election and will surely seek until the last instance to ensure that the union is not officially formed.
