AMD has been boasting about the longevity of its AM4 socketinitially launched in December 2016 and which is therefore about to turn 8 years old (AMD promised at least 5 years, so it has certainly delivered). However, and although the AM5 socket has been with us for some time now and in fact the next generation of processors for it is about to arrive, AMD has just made official two more processors for the AM4 socket, the Ryzen 9 5900XT and the Ryzen 7 5800XT.
We’ve actually been talking about these two new processors for weeks now… leaks, specifications, prices, delays in their launch… they’re being launched now, but they’re not really new because we already knew about them. But hey, now they’re official and we can leave rumors, assumptions and leaks behind because now all the information is official.
The last two processors that will see the AM4 socket are here
We start with the top-of-the-range processor, the Ryzen 9 5900XT, a 16-core, 32-thread processor that runs at a speed of 4.8 GHz (Boost) with a TDP of 105 watts, an identical number of cores to the flagship processor of that generation so far, the Ryzen 9 5950X, but with a speed 100 MHz lower.
For its part, the Ryzen 7 5800XT is an 8-core, 16-thread processor that also runs at a maximum speed of 4.8 GHz and also has a TDP of 105 watts; in this case, it runs at 100 MHz more than its equivalent, the 5800X.
Both processors have Zen 3 architecture, and of course, they are compatible with AMD’s AM4 socket. In theory, they should be compatible with almost all motherboards with this socket thanks to a BIOS update, although be careful because they may not be compatible with all of them, since in this case it will depend on the motherboard manufacturer and whether or not they want to release said BIOS update to ensure compatibility. In other words, before buying one of these processors, make sure that the manufacturer has released the necessary BIOS update for them to be compatible.
Price and availability
Both processors are already available for purchase, and in fact you can already buy them in Spain if you want. For example, here is the Ryzen 9 5900XT available at PcComponentes for 390 euros.
The Ryzen 7 5800 XT is also now available, in this case at a price of 349.99 euros. The truth is that for just 40 euros more you have a processor with twice as many cores and processing threads, but oh well.
And keep this in mind, because with the launch of these two new processors, many stores have decided to run an aggressive promotion to get rid of the stock of the processors they are replacing (i.e., the Ryzen 9 5900X and the Ryzen 7 5800X), which are still excellent processors and now at a really good price, because the discount is considerable.
For example, the Ryzen 9 5900X is available for 259.90 euros, probably only while stocks last.
For its part, the Ryzen 7 5800X also has an aggressive promotion and you could buy it for just 188.99 euros.
