As its name suggests, this offer will allow Starlink users to be able to travel with their antennas, and to continue to access the Internet via its satellites. The offer seems ideal for nomadic workers, who will therefore be able to travel regularly while continuing to access the Internet.
But to take advantage of this portability, you will have to pay an additional $25 per month in the United States.
“For an additional monthly fee, the portability feature allows users to temporarily move their Starlink to new locations in order to receive service anywhere on the same continent where Starlink has active coverage”can we read on the Starlink support site.
“When you activate portability, the charges are billed on your next monthly bill. Portability is billed in full monthly installments and cannot be prorated. The portability feature and billing fees will continue until you decide to turn it off”undermines the company further.
But Starlink also warns that this portability will have limits. Indeed, SpaceX will offer this portability service on a best effort basis. This means that when the user moves, the company no longer guarantees the declared speeds as well as the uninterrupted access to the Internet.
This is because resources are prioritized for people using Starlink at registered addresses. And when you move, you lose that prioritization.
As long as you stay on the same continent and no moving use
SpaceX allows users to roam anywhere on the same continent as the registered address. But it will not be possible to change continents. On the other hand, if the user stays in a foreign country for more than two months, he will have to change his address.
Finally, Starlink portability does not include using the service on the move. “We do not support Starlink in-motion usage at this time. Use of the Starlink Kit in motion voids your kit’s limited warranty. Our teams are actively working to enable Starlink to be used in on-the-go vehicles (e.g. automobiles, RVs, boats) in the future, Starlink is not yet configured for safe use in these terms “explains the support site.
As a reminder, one of the advantages of Starlink compared to other satellite internet access is its low latency. Indeed, SpaceX uses satellites in low orbit. Also, the company explains that its connection allows for example to participate in video calls, or to play online. This evokes download speeds between 100 and 200 Mbit/s, as well as a latency of 20 ms on certain sites.
Starlink continues to be talked about, but at the moment the service still has relatively few users. In February, it had 250,000 users worldwide.
But after the start of the war in Ukraine, SpaceX decided to activate its internet access in the country. And recently, the company reported that Starlink now has 150,000 users there.
