Plans to replace them
That is what Microsoft, Google and Apple have announced today on the occasion of this world day, their plans to gradually say goodbye to the password and replace it with something more secure. In this case it is about the joint plans to adopt passwordless login developed by World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the FIDO Alliance. What will happen in the future is that instead of entering a password in our favorite store or any other platform, we will use other more secure alternative methods.
These are for example the authentication via PIN or biometric data, such as fingerprint or face scan. In this way it will not help hackers to steal data from a server, because they will not find those passwords or data that can be identified as us. Therefore, what will be known as an access key will actually be a conglomeration of alternative authentication methods that will make it almost impossible for hackers to access our accounts.
Since for this they would need the physical device, our mobile, or security key. A password can be entered from any device on the planet, but a biometric identification method can only be performed on our device. those of Redmond have been the ones that have so far shown the most impetus for using these passwordless identification methods. A year and a half ago the company announced that up to 150 million users were already identified without the need to use passwords.
A more comfortable method
This new standard will not only be more secure, but it will be much more comfortable. Nowadays it is quite annoying not being able to enter a web page because we do not remember the password, something common when there are dozens if not hundreds of different websites and platforms that we can enter throughout the year. In this way it will no longer be necessary to store them, neither in our head nor in a file or app.
When you are access keys are available it will be very easy to access the platforms. On the one hand, many users will not have to identify themselves in an account once they have done so for the first time with these access codes. In addition, this method can be used on any device, regardless of the operating system or browser that we use, that is the objective of the large technology companies that have adopted this common identification system.
