Apple has revealed details of the development of Apple Intelligence in a recently published whitepaper!
This week Apple has released Apple Intelligence in the iOS 18.1 beta, with several tools which includes features like an improved Siri and AI-generated text summaries and many more that are not available. However, Getting to this point has cost a hasty investment of resources, including some from Google.
As suggested in a 47-page technical document published on Monday, Apple used Google Tensor chips to train Apple Intelligence.
Apple Intelligence had something of Google…in its beginnings
In the document titled “Language Models of the Apple Intelligence Foundation,” the Apple team delves into the technical details behind the language model that underpins this new technology. While it doesn’t name Google directly, it does note that its Apple Foundation Model (AFM) and AFM server are trained on “Cloud TPU clusters,” a technology developed by Google.
This revelation has sparked speculation about the nature of the relationship between Apple and Google in the field of AI.The company most likely acquired this hardware from Google and used it in its own data centers for the early stages of Apple Intelligence development, then found its own way.
Apple Intelligence is based on Apple Silicon architectureto process queries in its data centers, becoming a unique model independent of any of the technologies used in the early stage of development.
According to a publication of CNBC Neither Apple nor Google responded to questions regarding the matter. But it is possible that the apple company has been looking for the best strategies to take advantage of the time. Apple revealed its AI plans long after its competitors had moved ahead with the launch of generative AI-based softwareshortly after OpenAI’s ChatGPT launch in late 2022. And Apple Intelligence proves it’s caught up.
Apple’s big bet on AI
Apple’s investment in artificial intelligence is significant. The company has earmarked more than $5 billion to upgrade its AI servers over the next two years. This ambitious plan aims to bring Apple’s capabilities up to par with those of giants such as Microsoft and Meta. In addition, Apple has strengthened its AI team by acquiring companies specializing in data compression, which will allow it to optimize the processing of queries in data centers.
