Meta claims it would be a more open and affordable option to Apple’s closed system!
Since Mark Zuckerberg unveiled his plan to conquer the metaverse at a conference last year, all the companies in the world of technology have got down to work so as not to be left out of the “future”. But the founder of Facebook is attentive to the steps of one in particular: Apple.
The differences between Apple and Meta are not new. But the influence of those from Cupertino in changing Meta’s business model has made the situation more than tense, and Zuckerberg wants to destroy the company, as he has expressed on several occasions. And at least in the field of the metaverse, a goal has already been set.
Meta thinks of Apple as its main competitor in the metaverse
According to information shared by internal sources, Zuckerberg has told his employees that Apple will be the main competition in Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality hardwareeven though mixed reality glasses with the apple logo are expected in 2023.
From now on, the executive considers that will compete with Apple to establish “which direction the Internet should go”. and states that those from Cupertino will want to strictly control the experience because they believe that by doing everything themselves and integrating closely, they build a better experience for the consumer. While Meta would be positioned as a more open and economic option.
Before this panorama, Zuckerberg has also noted that he is not sure if an open or closed ecosystem would be better. and that Apple’s strategy may prove more beneficial than Meta’s open ecosystem. However, he states that Meta’s goal is to get its hardware into the hands of as many people as possible.
Apple works alone
The considerations of the promoter of the metaverse are appropriate, considering Apple’s absence from the Metaverse Open Standards Group, created together with Microsoft, Epic Games and others. The group aims to stimulate the creation of open protocols that allow people to easily move through future immersive 3D worlds with their virtual goods.
Goal ahead?
According to various reports Meta plans to launch a type of headset codenamed Cambria and it is also preparing its first pair of augmented reality glasses. While all the rumors suggest that Apple is working on mixed reality hardware, but designed for sporadic use.
In one of his first columns this year, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg even reported that the idea of a “metaverse” is “off limits” for Apple, at least for now. And it is that, as an innovative company, it is impossible for it not to be part of this transformation, but will it be as soon as Meta expects?
