The release of iOS 18 is imminent. Apple has confirmed that the new version of its mobile operating system will be available on September 16. But if you prefer to wait before taking the plunge, don’t panic: it will be possible to stay on iOS 17 while benefiting from security patches.
iOS 17.7, the best of both worlds?
Alongside iOS 18, Apple plans to release iOS 17.7. This update will not bring any new features, but will focus on bug fixes and security vulnerabilities for iOS 17 users.
A wise choice for those who want to avoid the small inconveniences of the newly released versions, such as possible compatibility issues with certain apps, particularly health-related ones. You will thus be able to wait serenely until iOS 18 is well-oiled, without compromising on security.
An option already seen in the past
This is not the first time that Apple has offered this type of alternative. Last year, the company continued to deploy security patches for iOS 16 even after the release of iOS 17. An option that had gradually been restricted to only devices not eligible for iOS 17.
Since iOS 18 is compatible with all iPhones that support iOS 17, we can expect Apple to stop updating iOS 17 in a few months. In the meantime, you’ll have plenty of time to upgrade to iOS 18 smoothly, at your own pace.
So go to your iPhone or iPad settings on September 16 to choose your side: iOS 18 and its enticing new features linked to Apple Intelligence, or iOS 17.7 and its reassuring stability. Knowing that Apple will simultaneously launch iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, tvOS 18, visionOS 2 and macOS Sequoia.
