The next Apple Watch SE could well swap its aluminum case for plastic. A radical change in material that would not only be aesthetic, but also strategic for Apple. The goal: to make its smartwatch more affordable and attractive to a young audience, by offering bright colors and a lower price.
A strategic shift for Apple
With this new material, Apple could offer the Apple Watch SE 3 in a wider range of bright and playful colors. Enough to contrast with the usual sober shades (black, silver, gold, etc.) and give a more fun and less “premium” side to the watch. This would better differentiate the SE range from the high-end Series models which would keep aluminum or steel cases. And above all, lower production costs to make the Apple Watch SE even more affordable.
Mark Gurman believes that Apple could position its watch as an alternative to smartphones for kids and teens. With a price tag lower than the current Apple Watch SE 2’s $249 (perhaps below $200), it would become more accessible to that audience.
Plastic, a good choice for children?
Beyond price, a plastic case could actually have advantages for younger users:
- Greater resistance to shocks and scratches during sporting activities
- Lighter weight and improved wrist comfort
- More fun colors and a more “Swatch” look than “Rolex”
Of course, it remains to be seen whether parents will be willing to give their children an Apple Watch rather than a specialized smartwatch like the Xplora. The price will probably remain a major obstacle.
But with its Fitness app, its challenges and its fun side, the Apple Watch has serious assets to please children — and their parents. If Apple manages to find the right positioning, it could well succeed in its bet and conquer a new audience with this Apple Watch SE 3. However, it might be necessary to enhance WatchOS with features dedicated to children: games, gentle activities, screen time limits, etc.
Apple is looking to bring younger and younger users into its ecosystem to keep them captive. Indeed, someone who had an Apple Watch as a child is more likely to remain an Apple customer as an adult. In addition, with family sharing and parental control, it is very possible that an Apple Watch aimed at younger people will be successful, especially if it is less expensive.
