University sport is a vital data in the USA and it is for this reason that Apple would have the idea of acquiring certain broadcasting rights. If that were the case, several Big Ten Conference games could end up streaming on Apple TV+.
Apple, sportier than ever!
Decidedly, the year 2022 is a sporting year for Apple. After acquiring a 10-year exclusive agreement on Major League Soccer and announcing the arrival of MLB (baseball) matches on Apple TV+, the Cupertino company is now tackling university sport.
According to The Athletic, Apple would have the idea of buying the broadcasting rights of the Big Ten Conference. This sports organization which has existed for almost 130 years in the United States (1896) is affiliated with Division 1 of the NCAA, which is none other than a sports association which organizes the programs of many schools and universities across the country. The goal would be to be able to stream college basketball and American football games.
Apple isn’t first on the case as Amazon has already been in talks with the organization’s leaders for some time. In terms of media rights (TV rights), it should go to CBS or even NBC, but in terms of the streaming lot, Apple and Amazon will fight.
If from a French point of view this may seem anecdotal, you should know that university sports, and basketball in particular, are very popular in the United States. By obtaining this new broadcasting contract, Apple would impose a little more its place in the broadcasting of sporting events.
