He said companies can use NavIC chips in mobile phones or provide NavIC chipsets. Let us tell you, Apple has supported NavIC in its new series. You will get this service on iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. For those who don’t know what NavIC is, it is actually called Indian Constellation Navigation in English. It is an Indian GPS system developed by ISRO. With your help the country’s dependence on the American GPS system will end.
Companies will get incentives
The Minister of State said that 5G smartphones will have to support NavIC (Indian Constellation Navigation) by January 1, 2025 and other mobile companies will have to provide this service on their phones by December 2025. The next round of the Production Linked Incentive or PLI scheme will also provide incentives to use NavIC support chips manufactured or designed in India in the system design. This means that companies will get some benefits.
Using NDMA and INCOIS
Presently indigenous GPS is being used by Army and NDMA. NDMA is using NAVIC for warning dissemination system for major natural disasters like landslides, earthquakes, floods and avalanches. Additionally, the Indian National Center for Ocean Information Systems (INCOIS) also uses it to issue warnings to deep sea fishermen regarding cyclones, high waves and tsunamis.
