Generative artificial intelligence is widely used for text, but also for creating videos. ByteDance, the company behind the global phenomenon TikTok, has just launched a new application, this time based on AI. Jimeng AI, which is currently only available in China, is capable of creating fictional (but rather realistic) videos thanks to AI! Of course, ByteDance has an idea in mind behind this initiative: to create a new source to encourage users to feed TikTok’s giant library.
This is Jimeng AI
ByteDance recently launched a new app on the Chinese App Store called “Jimeng AI.” The app can generate videos (and photos) from simple text, a technology already found in some competitors, including industry leader OpenAI.
In February, OpenAI unveiled its text-to-video model Sora, which quickly went viral on social media and in the media. While Sora isn’t yet available to the general public, it has impressed with its ability to create extremely realistic videos from text descriptions. ByteDance’s Jimeng AI is offering a near-identical experience to meet the growing demand for AI-powered video content creation in China.
Built by Faceu Technology, a subsidiary of ByteDance, Jimeng AI is currently only available in China. The prospects for its eventual international availability remain uncertain. Indeed, some countries may consider banning it, fearing espionage risks linked to the Chinese government, given ByteDance’s close ties to Beijing.
While everything seems exceptional at first glance, there is a slight disappointment on paper, Jimeng AI is not a free application. To access its features, users must subscribe to paid subscriptions: 69 yuan (about €8.79) per month or 659 yuan (about €83.92) per year.
