If you are a very absent-minded person and spend a lot of time looking for things that you don’t remember where you left, perhaps this topic will interest you. Losing cards, house keys or even not knowing where the TV remote is is something that can happen to any of us. But losing your ID is something important which can cause us displeasure.
The National Identity Document is a personal identification that we must always carry with us. If a police officer asks us to do so, we will have to take it with us to be able to identify ourselves and if not, it could result in a fine. But what if I have lost my ID? Additionally, we must take something into account: How many times can we lose our ID before it becomes a problem? Believe it or not, losing your ID many times can cost you a fine of up to 600 euros.
What to do if I lose my ID
When we lose our DNI we must go to a police station as soon as possible to notify the loss. We can go without an appointment to notify that we have lost the identity document and they will give us a receipt that tells us that we have lost it. Once we have it, we must make an appointment following the usual procedure… And on the day we have the appointment we must bring the corresponding receipt, a photo of the license and we must pay to have a new one. You never have to pay to renew your DNI but we do have to do it if it is due to loss and it has a total price of 12 euros when they make the duplicate for you.
Once you have it, you can use it normally. And, above all, try not to lose it again because doing so on several occasions can cost us quite dearly…
How many times can I lose my ID?
You may have never lost your ID but you may also be one of those people who constantly loses it and has to go back to the police station to get a new one. In that case, be careful. Because you can’t lose it as many times as you want without consequences, but they will penalize you and it can cost you dearly…
As stated in article 37 of the Organic Law of Citizen Security of March 30, 2015, there is a limit on the maximum number of times that you can lose the document: “Negligence in the custody and conservation of legally required personal documentation, considered as such the third and subsequent losses or misplacements within a period of one year.”
If you lose your ID three times in less than a year They can fine you and the sanction is considered a minor infraction but the fine can be from 100 to 600 euros and it will depend on whether you pay it quickly if it is 50%. In any case, losing it three times in less than a year is usually excessive and unusual so we should not worry.
What if they steal it from us?
If it is stolen we do not have to pay a fine because it will not have been our fault. The difference between theft and loss is that in the former we will have to file a complaint to the police where we state that our wallet or purse has been stolen. If they steal from us three times in a year, they are not going to fine us for it and as long as we justify it with the corresponding complaint, there will be no problem beyond the annoying procedure of having to look for a duplicate every few months to be able to have a new ID with us. .
