Of course, first you have to pass the theoretical exam. Once you have it, the practical exam. When you have successfully passed the tests, you will receive your final driving license but it can take months for it to arrive. What do we do while?
provisional card
At the moment you pass it, it is already established that you have a driver’s license. But it is also important that we take it with us when we are in the car. The definitive one will take a few months but it doesn’t matter, you will have an authorization that you can use until that moment arrives. While the definitive card arrives, you have a provisional card or an authorization that you can download yourself.
Until years ago, it was the DGT that sent you this provisional permit. Now it is much easier and we can get it from the online headquarters of the Directorate General of Traffic. To get the provisional card we can do it from their website.
We go to the Electronic Headquarters of the DGT and here we look for the option “check your exam grade”. You will have to fill in all the information that the page asks for. Once you do, you will check that you are fit to drive if you have passed. And from this same page we can obtain the authorization in a PDF document. Just click on “Get authorization”, Generate the document and print. Always carry it with you until you have the final card. And make sure you have all the information: name and surname, type of permit…
The provisional permit is valid in Spain for three months. The normal thing is that the definitive one arrives in a month and a half from the moment of the request.
Driving without a provisional license
What happens if I pass the driving school exam in the morning and in the afternoon I take the car without authorization? You can not do it. It is not enough to carry a piece of paper of “apt” that says that it is you and you have passed the exam. You must carry the provisional receipt to be able to drive, making sure that you are not going to be fined.
You really do have the card so they shouldn’t be able to fine you for not having it. But it may be that the database (and it is likely if you recently passed the exam) is not up to date and does not appear as such. In this case, the agents who stop you will be able to see that you are driving without a license. Something that is punishable by law and that can lead to large fines and even prison terms of three to six months.
Therefore, do not drive without the provisional license. In addition, being a PDF you must always accompany it with your identity document, your ID.
So what should you do?
Taking all of the above into account, you should not drive without a provisional license. It does not matter if someone tells you that you have already approved and anything goes. A photocopy of the driving school is not worth it nor that you say that you have examined yourself. It is not like this. The DGT makes it available to you in a matter of hours, so it is better to be patient than to face disappointment when an agent stops you on the road.
In addition, you must take into account other obligations as a rookie: carry the driver’s L for twelve months. the plate of the L It must be placed on the rear window of the car, in the upper left part. This will make the rest of the drivers, for a year, see that you are a novice. If you do not carry the plate with the L and you are stopped at a traffic control, the fine can be up to one hundred euros for it.
You should also know that the points on the card are eight at the beginning until you reach fifteen if you do not commit any infractions. And the BAC in novices is lower: during the first two years it is 0.3 mg per liter in blood or 0.15 mg per liter in inhaled air. Compared to the usual 0.5 g/l and 0.025g/l.
