It will soon no longer be as simple as it is today to take advantage of the ecological bonus. According to information from Le Figaro, the government would like to favor vehicles manufactured with the least carbon energy possible. Exit therefore the Chinese models, whose carbon footprint is often more substantial than its European counterparts.
On the consumer side, the ecological bonus is blessed bread. take advantage of 5000 € reduction to the purchase of an electric car, often expensive, it is not a refusal. Especially since for the time being, the government imposes few restrictions on his eligibility. To benefit from it, it is sufficient that the vehicle in question costs less than 47,000 euros and weighs less than 2.4 tonnes. In other words, motorists have no obligation to buy from a French manufacturer, or even a car made in France.
This is good business for foreign manufacturers. In the first quarter of 2023, Tesla took the lead in electric car sales, simply by reducing the price of its cars enough to qualify for the ecological bonus. But above all, some Chinese brands such as BYD or MG, also benefit from bonuses while their vehicles are fmade mostly from carbon energy. Not very environmentally friendly.
The government wants to make the ecological bonus truly ecological
The challenge is therefore to find a way to allocate this bonus to manufacturers who are really making efforts to reduce their carbon footprint, and not just those who produce electric cars. Precisely, this is precisely what the government is currently working on, according to information from Figaro. According to the daily, negotiations are underway with the actors of the Automotive Platform (PFA) to develop an eligibility criterion based on the carbon footprint of car manufacturing.

The objective could not be clearer: encourage manufacturers to locate their production in France, which would drastically reduce the share of transport, but would also make it possible to benefit from nuclear electricity, which is much less carbon-intensive than Chinese coal, where a large part of the world’s production is located. A measure that could also apply for the leasing offer at 100 € / month, so we still have little news.
