OpenAI’s GPT-4o model has propelled ChatGPT’s revenue to new heights. According to data from Appfigures, the popular chatbot’s mobile app generated $28 million in net revenue in July, its best month ever. That’s an impressive figure that doesn’t take into account the commissions Apple and Google take from their respective app stores.
GPT-4o boosts ChatGPT revenues
Launched last May, GPT-4o brought its share of new features to ChatGPT: support for text, speech and video, faster response times, the ability to interrupt the chatbot for more natural exchanges… Improvements that won over users and caused the application’s revenue to jump by 40% in May.
While growth has slowed slightly since then, it remains strong. ChatGPT reportedly earned the equivalent of $39.9 million in July before app store commissions. The majority (83%) came from Apple’s App Store, up 20% from June. These figures only take into account in-app subscriptions. It is entirely possible to subscribe to ChatGPT from OpenAI’s website for the same price, which allows the company to avoid the 30% tax and fly under the radar of subscriber figures.
2 million new subscribers in July
Also according to Appfigures, ChatGPT would have gained 2 million additional paying subscribers in July, a new record. The application is taking full advantage of the craze around artificial intelligence, and more particularly conversational agents like Siri at Apple.
And the trend is not expected to reverse anytime soon. ChatGPT is about to launch a new advanced voice mode, allowing for even more realistic and near-instantaneous interactions. Enough to continue to attract new users in the coming months and generate even more revenue for OpenAI.
The question remains: will these paying subscribers remain once ChatGPT is fully integrated into Apple Intelligence? In any case, it is not certain that the subscriptions will be enough to cover the massive investments and server costs for OpenAI, and a viable business model remains to be found.
