Are you as anxious as we are? New season, new season and a new Apple WWDC 2023 just around the corner. From sunny California they warm up their engines to surprise everyone with what will be the most important conference for developers and press of the year. In 2022 we live a WWDC 2022 full of surprises, emojis and a lot of muscle powered by an M2 chip that raised the ceiling even higher.
And this WWDC 2023 does not intend to be left behind, quite the opposite. Below we group all the leaks, rumors and potential products – hardware and software – planned by Apple to continue innovating.
What is WWDC 2023
For those who don’t know, WWCD stands for Apple Worldwide Developers Conference. In other words, the most important professional profile event held by the company. It has been held since 1983 in California, USA and is the ideal setting to discover all the news in the field of software, hardware and coding led by Apple.
Historically, WWDC has been a relevant framework for programmers and industry professionals. At WWDC 2021, for example, we were able to witness a paradigm shift with functions such as Focus. And two decades earlier we were astonished at the Mac OS X revolution. In 2007, for example, we were able to attend the presentation of the first iPhone development kit. In addition, it is convenient to tie up the hype and expectation until the last minute, because these events are usually characterized by their last-minute surprises.
In short, this is the ideal place and time to reveal the news of the different operating systems of Mac, iPad and iPhone. And it is also the reference point used to put the value of the Apple ecosystem on the table. You only need to take a look at the news in mimojis or Facetime to get an idea.
On what date will WWDC 2023 be?
When will Apple WWDC 2023 take place? Although those of Cupertino have not announced or given any specific date, it is easy to have an estimate based on the celebration of WWDC 2022 and previous years. And following this track it is plausible that we come across the inaugural keynote next Monday, June 5, 2023. This event would begin at approximately 10:00 a.m. local California time.
Previously, the date would be notified through an official announcement. Last year the designated date was April 5th. But this 2023 the presentation may be brought forward —without COVID and with the machinery ready to launch new products. Knowing this, WWDC 2023 would last from June 5 to 9, both included. If this schedule is confirmed, this is how the opening dates in the different Spanish-speaking territories would be reflected:
- Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua (11:00 am)
- Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru (12:00 pm)
- Bolivia, Chile, Cuba, Paraguay, Dominican Republic, Venezuela (1:00 p.m.)
- Argentina, Uruguay (2:00 p.m.)
- Spain (7:00 p.m.)
It is important to bear in mind that Apple will hold, as every year, a raffle to be able to purchase a ticket and attend in person. The ticket gives access for a week to the different activities that take place in San José, California. Among which stand out the different presentations by experts, the workshops and the presentations of products or implementation of tools in a year that is especially loaded with Artificial Intelligence.
Historically, the ticket price to access Apple Park is $1,599 and it was only available to developers and experts. However, in recent years it has been completely free —and not just for AltConf. As it was, the passes will sell out in a matter of seconds, as usual.
What will be presented at WWDC 2023?
And now we go with the presentations that we expect because there is a lot of fabric to cut. The new versions of Apple’s operating systems will make their appearance and, with them, all the associated news.
iOS 17
We put aside iOS 16, which by the announced dates will already go through the iOS 16.5 version, to finally know the latest innovations of iOS 17. A leap forward that proposes improvements in the ‘Wallet’ and the deferred payment system, the ‘Search’ applicationimplementations in Mail and an optimized ecosystem of shortcuts oriented to the ‘Home’ application and its various functionalities.
iPadOS 17
Although the transition between iOS and iPadOS is increasingly organic, Apple still dedicates a special page to the operating system of its tablet ecosystem. The latest rumors hint at a lock screen with new widgets, more and better implementations by third-party apps, and changes in ‘Calendar’, ‘News’ and the aforementioned ‘Mail’.
macOS 14
Apple’s annual WWDC this summer is the traditional place to learn about new Mac operating systems and macOS 14 will not be left behind. But what will be the chosen name? Let’s remember that, for years, Apple first opted for feline names —such as Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard— and then for the different iconic locations in California, such as Big Sur, Yosemite and El Capitan.
On this occasion, it is unknown what nomenclature we will see for that tentative macOS 14 that would be released at the end of the season. But it is clear that it will arrive with renewed widgets —with a ‘Clock’ and a ‘Weather’ application revised both aesthetically and conceptually-, improvements in the scenes and a Stage Manager, the window management system, quite redefinedso that the transition between iOS, iPadOS and macOS is as organic as possible.
watchOS 9
After watchOS 9 comes, of course, watchOS 10. We have seen many concept images and WWDC23 will be the place where we find out for sure. New spheres for Siri, new complications and shortcuts would be found with important improvements such as integration with the ‘Llavero’ app to access your passwords stored in iCloud at any time.
As it was, these are conjectures and there is still a lot of room for improvement in the integration and reading of messages, in addition to the metrics of some more minority sports. And be careful, because Apple has not updated its processor for a few years, so it is also likely that this new OS is focused on that S9 chip, with the aim of getting the most out of it.
tvOS 17
There is also plenty of room for innovation in image territory, visual standards and HDMI port performance, and after introducing Matter support for Apple TV and HomePod last year, this year would be the time to bet on the most technological part of the business. That is, a series of innovations aimed at communication with the company’s mixed reality viewer and the upcoming xrOS software.
The models compatible with this technological software revision would be the following:
- Apple TV HD (2015)
- Apple TV 4K (1st generation)
- Apple TV 4K (2nd generation)
- Apple TV 4K (3rd generation)
- HomePod (1st generation)
- HomePod mini
- HomePod 2
And since it is proprietary technology, spatial audio will most likely make an appearance, and it may even do so with second-generation AirPods Max.
The hardware that we will see at WWDC 2023
As for the devices section itself, it is already known that WWDC is also a designated date to launch second-line hardware products. Such has been the case with some of the first iPhones such as the iPhone 3G or the iPhone 4S, the HomePod —in 2017— or the 2017 iMac Pro. In this regard, suspicions point to the following direction:
Reality Pro Mixed Reality Glasses
Apple Glasses are the great thing, the jewel in the crown. No wonder this event opens literally with it, after the de rigueur keynote aimed more at investors than at developers. Those mixed reality glasses —virtual and augmented— that Apple has been brewing for two years are the great legacy of Tim Cook. The presentation of the viewer could be accompanied by a factual demonstration, with direct implementation in a set of applications and uses within professional interfaces.
New Mac Pro or Mac Studio 2023
The latest rumors point to a new Mac Pro 2023 that it would wear M2 Ultra processors. We are talking about a truly revolutionary system in terms of power, adapting the latest connectivity standards. However, Apple may take the opportunity to update the 24-inch or even 27-inch iMac, this time turning to the Apple Silicon M3 and M3 Pro chips.
15-inch MacBook Air
This could be the star team of WWDC 2023. In fact, it makes more sense than ever: MacBook Airs are the best-selling devices within the brand’s portable ecosystem and a 15-inch MacBook Air would be the ideal hybrid between portability and functionality. . An extremely thin, featherweight MacBook Air, but a more ambitious screen diagonal and capable in terms of hardware -by having an extra space for the speakers or the touchpad.
And, to top it off, it is even possible that we will know a third generation Apple Pencil, associated with new uses and applications on iPad. A 14-inch iPad Pro wearing the first M3 chip is also a long shot, but one to keep in mind.
Are Apple’s augmented reality glasses going to be seen at WWDC 2023?
As we said before, the possibility is quite high. And if at least we don’t get to know the final model, there will be a broad exposure of the Apple xrOS operating system, also known as realityOS. It is known that Tim Cook wants to have these mixed reality glasses ready when before, it is his great legacy and his possibilities in fields such as health are enormous.
But it is also true that even the developers themselves advise you to wait, be cautious and make more internal advances before the big popular exposure. So the big unknown remains open.
