the streaming platform is experiencing financial difficulties because it does not have a number of subscribers that can make the project viable.
DAZN wants to break the agreement
That the OTT fails to make the investment profitable for audiovisual rights is nothing new. We have seen prices rise and new subscription models appear to try to stop the DAZN loss bleedbut the project seems to be unfeasible.
DAZN pays 470 million euros per season to LaLiga for the broadcast of the competition. In turn, Movistar pays the sports streaming platform some 280 million euros to host its channels on Movistar Plus+ and that its clients have the entire day at their disposal regardless of the distribution of matches.
Despite this net cost of around 190 million euros, sources from the newspaper El Español have been able to confirm that DAZN has had problems complying with the payment schedule to LaLiga in the last times.
Taking into account that to comply with the initial rights agreement until the 2026/2027 season, it would still have to pay some 2,350 million euros, the OTT is considering the option of breaking its agreement with LaLiga soon and thus avoid having to face that millionaire .
Only half a million subscribers to DAZN LaLiga
The broadcast of LaLiga Santander from this season has been the great hook that DAZN has found for this course. The total number of subscribers to LaLiga amounts to 2.4 million, as confirmed by LaLiga to the clubs, but also reported at the last meeting of the TV rights control body that DAZN subscribers number only 500,000. These are not even data referring to the packages with LaLiga included, but rather that before the television rights agreement it already had more than 300,000.
With these figures, the project cannot become profitable if it is not with new price increases that, in turn, would end up scaring away a large part of the current clientele. Be that as it may, the experts affirm that DAZN must significantly increase its income for the next season or would have serious difficulties reaching 2027 and assuming the payments reflected in the contract.
The version that DAZN has given to El Español is that “it is false” that they have had difficulties in making payments or that there is the thought of breaking the contract with LaLiga, but they do not deny the fact that they have had to renegotiate a new payment schedule. On the part of LaLiga, during the last meeting of the TV organ, a club asked about the situation of DAZN’s payments and the official response was that the calendar had been met, but the difficulties that the company is going through were explicitly discussed. streaming for it.
