After announcing a price increase in the United States, the streaming platform is warning its subscribers that it plans to tackle account sharing in the coming weeks.
Disney+ had already warned its subscribers several months ago: password sharing is over! The streaming platform had already started cracking down last year in Canada and should generalize this measure as of next fall, according to The Verge. And this, after having adopted advertising and announced a new increase in its prices.
Disney+ dives into the dark side of SVoD
It was during an online conference that Robert Iger, CEO of Disney, announced the news. Disney+ is seriously planning to generalize the sharing of paid accounts as early as September, thus following in the footsteps of Netflix which adopted this measure last year. This hunt for password sharing has already begun in June in some countries and several subscribers have already been notified of the upcoming changes.
For now, it is not yet known how much account sharing will cost. For its part, Netflix charges an additional €5.99 per additional user, the same price as its basic subscription. It remains to be seen whether this decision will make Disney+ gain subscribers… or lose them. It is a risky bet, but the streaming platform is taking advantage of its recent profitability to start implementing restrictive measures.
A measure that has been rather successful for Netflix
For Netflix, the end of password sharing has resulted in an increase in its subscriber base. Even today, the red N continues to break records despite restrictions and advertising. While Disney+ is largely inspired by its rival’s winning strategy, it still needs to make its subscribers want to stay, and that’s done through the content offered.
