During Disney’s presentation at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival, Josh D’Amaro, President of the company’s Parks and Experiences, stole the show with an impressive “real” lightsaber, inspired by Star Wars. Here, the executive was clearly excited to show the public what the iconic weapon of the franchise looks like brought to reality. “I have the coolest job in the world,” he commented during the presentation.
“I’m holding a real lightsaber,” he assured the expectant audience. Shortly after, activated the weapon with the touch of a button, which also deployed its beam of light with incredible smoothness and that we had only seen in movies and series. To demonstrate the sound effects of him, D’Amaro began to move the lightsaber in the best Star Wars style, letting us see what an impressive toy Disney has managed to create.
Do you want to try one of these lightsabers? Unfortunately, it won’t be available to everyone. This “toy” is part of the Walt Disney World Resort Galactic Starcruiser experience. So, if you want to experience what it feels like to activate a Star Wars lightsaber in reality, you’ll have to shell out a hefty amount to stay in the Disney rooms.
How this “real” Disney lightsaber works that looks like something out of Star Wars
You will have already seen in the video that, unlike most lightsabers on the market, this new version developed by Disney unfolds extremely smoothly. In this way, not only does it more faithfully imitate what is seen in the Star Wars franchise series and movies, but it also leaves aside the ordinary methods of bringing these types of toys to reality. In the latter case we find from static bars that turn on and off, to stacked sections that extend to form a single one.
On this occasion, Disney has decided to test the ingenuity of its designers to make this lightsaber a reality. While the company still doesn’t explain how the toy works, Some time ago the patent detailing the mechanics behind it had already been leaked.. Although it is not certain that it is the same, it is the closest we have to a technical explanation.

Well then, we found two coils of translucent material, fully coiled like a tape measure inside the base of the lightsaber. In its cross section, both ribbons have a semicircular shape that, when joined, form a tube. Also, when deployed, they drag a strip of led light with them. This will be in charge of illuminating the lightsaber as if it were a real Star Wars weapon.
If you want to see how it works in more detail, Twitter user @benridout posted a couple of videos at the time that explain the concept behind the technology employed by Disney.
