Periodically, I like to do a backup of the bookmarks in Google Chrome, just in case. It may not make sense, but I manage many and they all have a function or I have them saved for a reason. I’m going to explain how to make a backup of the bookmarks bookmarks in chrome and how synchronize them with any device.
The term bookmark is used to refer to any web page that we have saved in our browser. It allows us to avoid having to remember a URL, which is complicated if it is a specific page within a website.
They are especially useful for saving a page with useful information, such as recipes, DIY projects or products that we want to buy later. We will explain how to download them as a backup and how to synchronize them with any device.
Save Chrome Bookmarks Manually
Saving all your browser bookmarks by hand doesn’t make much sense. Copying every address into, say, a Word document is simply a huge waste of time. There is a fairly simple method to save all your bookmarks into a single file in just a few seconds. You need to follow these steps:
- You must go to the upper right corner and click on the three dots that you will see next to the user profile icon.
- Look for the “Bookmarks and Lists” option in the menu, which is roughly in the middle.
- A submenu will open and here you need to look for the “Bookmark Manager” option.
- It opens a window inside the browser with all the bookmarks and folders. Now, within this page, you must look for the three-dot icon to open the bookmarks menu.
- One of the options we will see is “Export bookmarks”.
- All that remains is to give it a name, determine where we want to save it and click on the “Save” button.
This is a really simple process, as you can see, that requires just a few clicks and takes next to no time. You can then also copy them to a USB stick or save them to the cloud, so you always have them available.
Sync bookmarks and websites saved in the cloud
It’s very common to use the Chrome browser on multiple devices. It’s available in desktop versions for Windows and macOS, as well as for Android and iOS. So you might want to have bookmarks on all the versions of the browser you use. This is easy and you can get them in the following way:
- We have to open the settings menu, which are the three dots in the upper right corner.
- We go down to “Settings” which is one of the last options.
- It is important that we are logged in with a Google account.
- Within the “You and Google” option we must enter “Synchronization and Google services”.
- Now click on the “Manage what you sync” option. It offers several additional encryption options to improve security.
- You can choose between “Sync All” or the “Custom Sync” option. The second option allows us to narrow things down further, limiting it to Bookmarks or other items that we want to sync across all devices.
- Once ready, we can close this window, since the changes are saved automatically.
We have a simpler option than exporting the bookmarks, sending them to the device we want and importing them. We save a lot of steps and a lot of time, since this process is quite fast.
