What were the best-selling electric cars in France in 2023? Which manufacturer was best able to oppose Tesla's domination?
2023 could remain a symbolic year for the electric car in France. The end of the ecological bonus for a good number of manufacturers, the arrival of more accessible models or even the announcement of the electric car at 100 euros/month will undoubtedly have consequences on user behavior. So this is one more reason to look a little closer at the ranking of electric car sales… in 2023. What is the outcome of this last year of the generalized ecological bonus?
Tesla crushes sales rankings
At the top of sales, a manufacturer takes two of the three places on the podium. Tesla can boast of having the best-selling car in France in 2023, with the Model Y (37,127 registrations), while having continued to sell a good quantity of its sedan. The Model 3 has sold 24,539 copies.
Between the two Californians, only the Dacia Spring managed to oppose the Tesla tide. There low cost made in China benefits from a very attractive price in addition to not having any real competition in France. It should be noted that apart from certain Model Ys manufactured in the Berlin Gigafactory, the three best-selling models in France in 2023 will no longer be eligible for the electric bonus this year.
MG4, the hit of the year
The most significant progress can be attributed to MG. The English brand, owned by SAIC Motors, almost absent from the latest market barometers, took 6th place in the annual ranking with the MG4 sold in more than 20,000 units (20,072). During our test of the compact, we praised the model's unrivaled quality/price ratio. Consumers were not mistaken. On the other hand, as for the top trio in the ranking, the MG4 will no longer benefit from the ecological bonus in 2024.
As for French manufacturers, apart from the Spring exception, the findings are mixed. Peugeot, which had the best-selling electric car in France in 2022, the e-208, only obtained 5th place with its compact this year. While waiting for the essential e-3008 and e-5008, the Lion will be banking on a restyling of the e-208 to boost its sales this year.
Renault: towards a renewal of the catalog
For Renault too, 2023 represented a turning point. The diamond is doing honorably. In addition to the Mégane, which is its best-selling electric model (7th with 17,623 registrations), the French brand places two other models in the top 10. The Renault Twingo and Zoé are certainly at the end of their careers, but they are bowing out in style . To replace them, Renault will rely heavily on the new electric R5 expected in the coming weeks, but also on the Scénic for the SUV part.
Finally, in this ranking, several figures are striking. This is the case, for example, of the number of electric sales of the VW group. The world automotive leader places only two models in this top 20, the ID.3 and the ID.4 for a total cumulative sales of less than 9,000 units. Another giant absent from this ranking: Toyota. His Bz4X just isn't on this list. Finally, the solid Hyundai-Kia holds its place thanks to its compact SUVs. The Niro and the Kona come respectively in 11th and 12th position in this ranking, which is rounded off by the BMW iX1, the cheapest electric model from the German manufacturer. Moreover, the BMW group can boast of having another successful model with its Mini, the ninth best-selling electric car this year, despite (or thanks to) an imminent new version.
