On a Tesla, new hardware doesn’t always mean a better experience. If Elon Musk is to be believed, it should last a while longer when it comes to autonomous driving on the HW4 compared to the HW3. We will explain everything to you.
The latest hardware version dedicated to Tesla driving assistance, the HW4 (or Hardware 4) has caused a lot of ink to flow since the beginning of the year. Moreover, some customers even postponed the delivery of their new Tesla to be sure that they were not going to have one of the last cars with the HW3. What if it wasn’t such a good idea after all?
New hardware that requires optimization
The information — which is actually an open secret for those in the know about the brand — was shared by the CEO himself, Elon Musk, on his favorite social network. It responds to a request regarding the differences in autonomous driving (the FSD in beta in the USA) between the HW3 and the HW4.
Elon Musk clarifies: the software on the HW4 is going to lag the HW3 for another six months as we have to focus on the FSD which needs to work great on the HW3 and ship it internationally. So we learn two things from this.
The first is that for the next six months, the HW4 is not going to be better than the HW3 on autonomous driving, quite the contrary. It is undoubtedly because of the billions of kilometers recorded by the Tesla fleet in HW3 which have allowed optimization on this material, which we do not find for the moment with the HW4 which is only on a few tens of thousands of cars.
The second is confirmation that the current version of the FSD (which is called fully autonomous driving capability in France) will go beyond US borders. As a reminder, for more than 6 years now, some Europeans have bought this option, which is charged at a high price, without being able to really benefit from it.
We could be optimistic and tell you that within six months, the HW4 will start to overtake the HW3 as indicated by Elon Musk, however the boss of the firm has a tendency to miss his promises. So don’t hold your breath just yet.
