Although the autonomy of smartphones and other smart devices has improved, charging them is still an important issue. What if fast charging, what if wireless charging, what if USB type C on the iPhone 15… the sector is looking for a standard with which to universalize all these technologies, and in the European Union they have already given the first steps.
There is as an example the radical change in the connector of Apple mobile phones, but now they are looking for a technology with which to establish a wireless charging standard for everyone. The CNMC already has a proposal, found in the search for the ‘ring’ in the purest MagSafe style, and we will tell you what it is.
USB type C, PD fast charging, but… What do we do with wireless charging?
As we read in BandaAncha, the CNMC (National Markets and Competition Commission) defends Europe in the choice of universal USB-C chargerbut this is not the only aspect that must be clarified about the charging of devices such as smartphones or tablets.
Another aspect to determine affects the fast charging technology, the one that makes our mobile battery fill more quickly by increasing parameters such as voltage or current. Well, regarding fast charging, the RED directive (Radio Equipment Directive) approved by the EU in 2022 dictates that if a device exceeds 15 watts of charging, they must adopt PD (Power Delivery) technology as standard.
Likewise, the guidelines mark as not mandatory the fact of include the charger in the box of smartphones, with an eye on sustainability. These obligations will come into force by the end of next year, in 2024, and will be extended to laptops the following year.
At the state level, the Ministry of Digital Transformation He is in charge of transferring the European proposals to our country. In fact, the Royal Decree that incorporates the latest changes regarding battery charging is now ready. On the other hand, another protagonist, the CNMC, has taken advantage of the dilemma to launch an idea in relation to wireless charging, in a public report.
As we know, some smartphones incorporate this technology that prevents us from having to use the cable to recharge their batteries. They rest on a charging base, and they begin to load without further additions. Well, the organization that ensures the well-being of the market has proposed Qi2 technology as a standard.
“The new Qi2 version is compatible with the previous version and may become the de facto standard, so a European standard wireless charging interface should pursue Qi2 compatibility.”
These are the words of the CNMC in relation to the Qi2 standard, placed in a good position for the EU to subsequently I adopted it as universal. In addition, the regulator also proposes marking the USB-C connector as a standard also on chargers.
In the coming months we will see how all these proposals end. Some are already within the Royal Decree and therefore will be mandatory, but it is interesting to see that the organizations are involved with the different technologies that our devices equip. Thus, the users will be the main beneficiaries.
