You may not remember it or have never experienced it, but there was a time when sending a message cost money. Luckily, that time has passed and now we can send hundreds of messages without problems. However, we are going to explain how to know how much money you would have come to spend if for each message of WhatsAppyou would have to pay.
In the past, they were sent SMStext messages with a maximum of 140 characters for each SMS. These messages had a cost individual average of 0.15 eurosalthough some operators used to offer deals in this regard.
You should know that those messages only contained plain text, that is, letters, numbers and symbols. Sending a document, a photo, a video or a song was something impossible and that nobody could have imagined. Well, the first mobile phones didn’t even have a camera to take photos, that integration is quite modern.
How much would you have spent if each WhatsApp cost you money?
Let’s try to do the exercise of figuring out how much you would have spent if you were charged the same for each WhatsApp message as for each SMS. The first thing we need to do, for the calculation, is to find out how many messages we have sent. Luckily, the application gives us this information and you can find it by following these steps:
- Start WhatsApp on your smartphone
- Tap on the three dots in the upper right corner and in the menu tap on “Settings”
- Next, click on the “Storage & data” option.
- Inside you must access the “Data Usage” section.
- One of the options is “Messages” and below it will show the messages sent and received.
Now we can see how many messages we have sent since we started using the app and how many we have received. This is quite interesting information, and it also gives us the size of shared media files, statuses, and other data.
Unfortunately, there is no way to know how many had more than 140 characters and how many had less. We are simply going to take the number of messages sent, which in our case is almost 38,000 messages. We multiply this figure by 0.15 euros and we get that we would have spent around 5,700 euros.
This figure does not take into account multimedia files sent and messages of more than 140 characters. Bear in mind that if you exceeded this limit, even if it was just by one character, you had to pay for another SMS. In other words, the figure could end up being double the stated amount.
It is also not taken into account that in the past there were monthly SMS plans. There was a fixed number of these messages at a reduced price and then the “normal rate” was applied, which could be double. It should be noted that SMS could not carry attachments. Surely some of the messages sent contained a photo, video, link or some other element.
Luckily, nowadays, we don’t have to go around summarizing messages, making missed calls and other archaic tricks. We have flat rate messaging plans, large data packages and we no longer send SMS except in specific cases, we send messages through applications, which are free.
And tell us, how many WhatsApp messages have you sent and how much would the joke have cost you?
