Searched more than 2.5 lakh phones in a month
In the first one month of its launch, the Sanchar Saathi portal of the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) received a spate of complaints about lost and stolen phones. Out of which, with the help of the portal, smartphone users were able to block 541,428 mobile phones and trace 255,882 lost devices. This portal has been launched on 16 May.
According to estimates, the market for lost or stolen phones is around Rs 1,200 crore. There are over 50,000 lost or stolen devices a month. But with the help of the portal, a user can block the Unique Identification Number (IMEI) of a device, rendering the phone unusable, even if a new SIM card is inserted in the phone. The phone cannot be used, after which its resale value becomes zero. However, even after this the phone can be sold in the gray market. But the equipment becomes unusable and its buying and selling in the market stops.
These facilities are available on the Sanchar Saathi portal
Through this portal, the mobile user can know whether more connections have been fraudulently taken in his name or not and can also be blocked. Apart from this, in case of blocking by the original user, the system can check vice how many connections are there in his name. Also users can track and block the phone.
