The best thing about modern cars is that they are all, or almost all, compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This means that, for the first time, we have a unified ecosystem throughout the automotive sector. Or that was the idea.
In most cases, these infotainment and geolocation functions are part of the standard equipment, but that is going to change in General Motors electric vehicles. From now on, the cars of the American brand will carry a proprietary internal software system called Ultifi.
It will not be an overnight change. In a press release, GM promises that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality will continue in combustion vehiclesas well as in currently available electric vehicles.
Besides, the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV will keep the features, but not the Blazer EV that will launch later this year. That’s where the move to GM’s new embedded software suite begins, which will continue with the Chevrolet Equinox EV, GMC Sierra EV, and Cadillac Celestiq. Many of these cars are not sold in Europe.
Charging for what is free today, the goal of General Motors
Why the change? GM claims that future advanced driver assistance systems and complex vehicle displays will be better implemented using internal software rather than a phone passthrough.
Examples include more advanced navigation features that can find routes suitable for Super Cruise and Ultra Cruise or locate charging stations. GM further claims that its internal system will be easily upgradeable for new features..
Of course, it is impossible to ignore the possibility that subscription services are part of this strategy. On that front, GM hasn’t said anything else, but the experts are clear that it will be used for lucrative purposes in the form of a subscription.
While Apple and Android systems will disappear, GM emphasizes that wireless Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calls, messages and music will continue to be available.
