So far, one of our favorite Mini PCs is the GEEKOM A7, at least until this new one came along. GEEKOM AX8 Proin which the logical step of equipping an A is madeMD Ryzen 9 8945HS (or 7 8845HS) where the 780M will make it a real gaming rig.
There are new features in the design, adopting an aluminum and plastic chassis, same front and rear port panel, but without an SD card reader, and only one M.2 Gen4x4 slot inside, albeit with 2TB.
We thank GEEKOM having trusted us by lending us this equipment for analysis.
GEEKOM AX8 Pro technical characteristics
Unboxing
We begin with the presentation of the GEEKOM AX8 Probeing in this case the same as the GEEKOM GT13 Pro, improving its construction by adopting a compartment for the Mini PC and another drawer type for accessories.
The contents of the package will be as follows:
- GEEKOM AX8 Pro
- 120W power adapter
- HDMI cable
- VESA adapter 100×100 mm
- Documentation
External analysis
GEEKOM AX8 Pro It is presented as the natural evolution of the A7 in terms of CPU, but there are slight changes in the chassis design, implementing the same, for example, as the GEEKOM GT13 Pro.
We must keep in mind that The main or most complete series will be the A8while the AX8 will be one step below When it comes to chassis and components, there are certain aspects where the A7 itself outperforms this Mini PC.
It is presented to us in a unibody chassis built in aluminum that forms the sides, where also part of the edges form a single block, giving strength to the whole.
The top is of plastic material, polycarbonate or ABSwe are not sure, although under it there is metal cover integrated on the side chassis. We will be able to see it when the team is dismantled.
This one remains simply smooth, with the silver brand logowhile the sides maintain the air intake grilles for the honeycomb heatsink.
He Front panel is integrated into the metaljust like the rear, with gridto facilitate the evacuation of hot air from the heatsink
The base of the Mini PC is made on the same frame that the faces corresponding to the front and rear areaso all of this will be extracted in one go.
Have non-slip rubber supports for the floor, while in the corners we find the screws that separate the cover and allow access to the interior without voiding the product warranty.
Connectivity
We return to the port panels GEEKOM AX8 ProIn which we find basically the same thing as in the GT13 Pro.
On the front panel we have:
- 1x USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A with Power Delivery
- 1x USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A
- 3.5mm combo jack for audio and microphone
- Power button with integrated LED
Rear panel:
- DC-In 19V Jack
- 1x USB4 Type-C 40 Gbps, DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery
- 1x USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C, DisplayPort 1.4 and Power Delivery
- 2x HDMI 2.0b
- RJ-45 2.5Gbps
- 1x USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A
- 1x USB 2.0
We have a total of 3 USB working at 10 Gbps, and a USB4 at 40 Gbpswith video output up to 8K and Power Delivery capability on 3 interfaces, which is not bad at all.
However, just as it did with the GT13 Pro and some other Mini PCs, the brand has removed, or rather, omitted SD card slot utilitywhich remains integrated into the PCB.
As for network connectivity we have the Realtek chip that offers 2.5Gbps and Wi-Fi 6E card with a card MediaTek MT7922which has the capacity Triple band and Bluetooth 5.3.
Internal analisis
We remove the lower cover to access the interior of the GEEKOM AX8 Proa possibility that the brand offers us without loss of warranty, in case we want to upgrade your RAM, SSD or Wi-Fi card.
We don’t see the CPU as it is on the top side of the PCB, but we have a AMD Ryzen 9 8945HSupdated version of the 7940HS, belonging to the architecture 5nm Zen 4.
It has 8 cores and 16 threads like the previous one, operating at 5.2 GHz boost frequency and 4 GHz base frequency, maintaining its TDP at 45W and 16MB L3 cache for this unit. It also features 16 TOPS NPU to use AI applications like Microsoft Copilot.
The integrated graphics configuration remains unchanged across all Radeon 780M at 2.8GHzwith a total of 12 cores based on RDNA 3 architecture. It means that support Ray Tracing, FSR 3 and HYPR-RX.
The RAM configuration remains at 32 GB via 2 Crucial SO-DIMM modules to 5600 MHz, with expansion capacity up to 64 GB. It is a good configuration, available in both versions for sale, so we have no complaints.
An SSD is added Acer Gen4x4 2TB M.2, for the only available slot on the computer.
We criticize the fact that do not add a second M.2 slot to expand its capacitysince there is space on the motherboard to place it, and we have it available in the Intel options, even if it is for SATA drives.
Finally, the heatsink undergoes an evolution, at least in its name, being called IceBlast 1.5 (previously GEEKCOOL 4.0). It looks the same in aesthetics and is slightly larger in size, so we will see how it performs with this CPU compared to the A7 model.
Test of performance
We continue with the performance analysis of this GEEKOM AX8 Pro performing multiple benchmarks.
CPU and GPU Benchmarks
We will continue with the synthetic tests, and for this we have used the following programs:
- Cinebench R23, 2024
- PCMark 8 and 10
- VRMark
- 3DMark Time Spy, Fire Strike
- CrystalDiskMark
- Aida64 RAM
Testing in games
We went on to see the performance of the GEEKOM AX8 Pro performing tests with current games at low quality to see how the APU behaves.
- Shadow of the Tomb RaiderLow, DX12
- Doom EternalLow, Vulkan
- Horizon Zero DawnLow, DX12
- StarfieldLow, FSR 3 Performance + Frame Generation (FG)
- Assassin’s Creed ValhallaLow, DX12
- AvatarLow, DX12, FSR 3 Performance + FG
- Marvel’s Spiderman RemasteredLow, DLSS 3 Balanced + FG
- Cyberpunk 2077, Low, FSR 2 Performance
- ForspokenLow, FSR 3 Balanced + FG
We expected more noticeable improvements in terms of what the GEEKOM A7 offered, because in some cases, there is indeed better, especially Spider-Man, which honestly tends to be a box of surprises, but in other games it falls short.
Temperatures and consumption
GEEKOM AX8 Pro has undergone a stress process of 60 minutesto find a stable and reliable measurement of temperatures. This process has been carried out with FurMark, first with CPU and then with iGPU, monitoring temperatures with HWiNFO.
Temperatures | |||
GEEKOM GT13 Pro | Repose | Full | Maximum |
CPU | 49ºC | 92ºC | 92ºC |
Noise | 30dBA | 37dBA | – |
Consumption | |||
GEEKOM AX8 Pro | Repose | Full CPU | Full iGPU |
Set | 13W | 63W | 73W |
The behavior under stress of this CPU is more stable than in the previous generation, since we obtain a regime of 0.989V @4.24 GHz stable at 92ºC and 46W.
Stressing GPU + CPU we get a stable regime of 3.62 GHz @ 0.854V in cores, maximizing its consumption with 54W at 89ºC average.
This shows, first, that the TDPs are better tuned, and that the heatsink allows this by demonstrating very good performance during the process.
Final Words and Conclusion about GEEKOM AX8 Pro
With this GEEKOM AX8 Pro vs A7 we must focus our opinion on pure performance, design and connectivity, everything else is the same.
This CPU upgrade represents a slight increase in CPU performancethanks to an architectural revision that improves its efficiency, but that we will not notice during normal use of the system.
FPS rates in games remain very similar to the previous model, since the integrated graphics are identical and so is the TDP on which it works. Better CPU performance means you’ll see a few more FPS, which is ultimately what you’re aiming for, but in practice 1 or 2 FPS doesn’t change the gameplay experience.
A relevant detail of this CPU is that 16 TOPS NPU equipsmore powerful than the previous generation, Providing more capacity for AI taskswhich have more and more weight in the operating system Windows 11 Pro included as standard.
Guide to the best Mini PCs
As far as external connectivity is concerned, it is extremely complete, even with USB4, but There is no second M.2 slot and the SD card reader has been omitted even if present.
He design It is excellent, with chassis of mostly aluminumexcellent finish and compact size with 38.5 mm thickness, which barely fits in one hand. Although the A7/A8 is a step above.
GEEKOM AX8 Pro costs €879 for the R7-8845HS + 32 GB RAM + 1 TB SSD version and €999 for the version R9-8945HS + 32GB RAM + 2TB SSDwith a 5% discount in official store if we apply the coupon: ACIAX8.
In Amazon We have it for a similar price, and we can also apply a 5% discount coupon with code: V9JHMPQ4.
While the base price of the GEEKOM A8 is slightly higher, we have a better and more compact chassis, as well as active SD card reader. Just for that, and because at the time of the review we have it at €979, It is a more recommendable option.
