Global 5G subscriptions grew by 175 million in the second quarter, while India saw the largest increase in overall mobile subscriptions with over seven million new users during the period. Joining the second quarter has brought the global number of 5G subscriptions close to 1.3 billion, according to an Ericsson Mobility Report. In the second quarter, the number of mobile subscriptions totaled 8.3 billion, with a net increase of 40 million subscriptions during the quarter.
The number of unique mobile subscribers stood at 6.1 billion. India had the highest net increase (over 7 million) during the quarter. India was followed by China (five million) and the US (three million) in terms of mobile subscribers. The report states that around 260 Communication Service Providers (CSPs) have launched commercial 5G services. Around 35 CSPs have launched 5G Standalone (SA) networks. Global mobile subscription penetration was 105 percent in the second quarter.
The number of mobile broadband subscriptions increased by nearly 100 million in the quarter, to total 7.4 billion, an increase of 5 percent year-on-year. The findings showed that mobile broadband now accounts for 88 per cent of all mobile subscriptions. Mobile data traffic increased by 33 percent between Q2 2022 and Q2 2023. 4G subscriptions grew by 11 million, totaling nearly 5.2 billion and accounting for 62 percent of all mobile subscriptions.
